These Christian prayers for Veterans Day are written to give thanks for those who have served in the armed forces, to pray for their healing and peace, and to ask God to hold the families who carry their sacrifice. Pray the main prayer on November 11 or any day you want to honor a veteran, read it aloud as written, or use it as a starting point and make it your own.

Christian Prayers for Veterans Day

Father, on this day we thank you for the men and women who answered the call to serve. Some of them left home at eighteen and came back changed in ways no one could see from the outside. Some never came home at all. Some are still carrying memories that wake them at three in the morning, and some are learning how to sit at a family dinner table again after years of being on alert. We ask you to meet each of them where they are today.

Lord, comfort the veterans who live with injuries, both visible and hidden. Give them steady sleep, honest friends, and doctors and counselors who listen well. Surround the families who wait, worry, and keep the porch light on, and give them rest when the waiting has worn them thin. For those who lost a friend in service, carry the weight they cannot set down, and remind them that their grief is known to you.

We thank you for courage that often goes unspoken, for sacrifices made quietly, and for the strength you gave every person who wore the uniform. Let every veteran know that their service is remembered and that they are not forgotten. Hold them close, guide their steps, and fill them with your peace. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, thank you for every veteran I know and for those I will never meet. Be near the ones who are hurting today, and steady the families who love them. Give them rest, give them hope, and remind them that they are seen. Thank you for their service and their courage. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

Use this verse when a veteran is grieving a comrade or carrying a wound that feels too heavy. Pray that God would draw near to the brokenhearted and save those whose spirits are crushed, trusting that he is closer than they feel.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Pray this for the veteran who still feels the pressure of being on alert. Ask God to remind them of his presence and strength, so that fear does not have the final word in their thoughts.

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Pray this over those who are deployed, traveling, or waiting for someone to come home. Ask the Lord to keep them safe in going out and in coming in, both now and always.

Joshua 1:9

Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

(WEB)

Pray this for a veteran facing a new season, such as a job search, a move, or a return to civilian life. Ask God to give them courage and to remind them that he goes with them wherever they walk.

Matthew 5:9

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.

(WEB)

Pray this for those who served in conflict and now long for peace in their hearts and in the world. Ask God to make them peacemakers at home, in their families, and in their communities.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it meaningful to pray the main prayer early in the morning, before the day’s noise begins, or on Veterans Day itself at a quiet moment. Sit somewhere you feel settled, such as a kitchen chair or a porch step, and hold a coffee cup or a small flag in your hands while you read. Let the pauses between sentences be real pauses.

You might pray this with a veteran in your life, or invite a family to read it together around the table. A parent can pray it with children, a small group can take turns reading paragraphs, or a church can use it during a service. Pray for the names of veterans you know, and speak those names aloud as you finish.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless every veteran with rest that restores and peace that holds steady. May he keep their families close, lift their burdens, and remind them daily that their service has not gone unseen. May he go with them wherever they walk, now and always.
