This list gives you Bible verses to steady your heart if you serve as a missionary, whether you are preparing to leave, learning a new language, or far from home and worn thin. The verses below speak to fear, loneliness, weariness and the uncertainty of serving where results are slow to appear. What they share is a plain promise: God goes with the people he sends, and he does not lose sight of them.

Verses for Facing Fear and Uncertainty Abroad

Missionaries often carry fears that are hard to name aloud: unfamiliar streets, unclear visas, a language that will not yet come. These verses speak to the moment when the unknown feels heavier than the calling itself.

Joshua 1:9

Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

(WEB)

God speaks this to Joshua just before he leads a people into land they have never seen. Before your next border crossing or first day in a new village, read it slowly and then say the word “strong” out loud as a small act of trust.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

This verse names fear and then answers it with God’s own presence and help. When a conversation or decision leaves you anxious, pause and repeat the phrase “I am with you” to yourself before you speak.

Psalm 56:3

When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.

(WEB)

The psalmist admits fear without shame and chooses to trust anyway. Write this verse on a card in your pocket, and when fear rises during a hard day, take the card out and read it before you do anything else.

Deuteronomy 31:6

Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or scared of them; for the LORD your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you.”

(WEB)

Moses tells the nation that God will not leave them, even as they go forward into danger. Before you leave for a field trip or a long journey, read this verse aloud in your home as a reminder that you are not going alone.

Verses for Loneliness and Being Far From Home

Distance from family, friends and familiar worship can make a missionary feel unseen. These verses point to a God who keeps close company with those who serve far from their own places.

Psalm 139:7-10

7 Where could I go from your Spirit? Or where could I flee from your presence? 8 If I ascend up into heaven, you are there. If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, you are there! 9 If I take the wings of the dawn, and settle in the uttermost parts of the sea; 10 Even there your hand will lead me, and your right hand will hold me.

(WEB)

The psalmist asks where he could go to escape God and finds no place outside his reach. When you feel cut off from everyone you know, let this passage remind you that your location does not change whether God is present.

Matthew 28:20

Teaching them to observe all things that I commanded you. Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

(WEB)

Jesus ends his Gospel with a promise to be with his followers always, even to the end of the age. Tie this verse to the sending itself, and when you feel most alone, recall that the one who sent you promised to stay.

Psalm 68:6

God sets the lonely in families. He brings out the prisoners with singing, but the rebellious dwell in a sun-scorched land.

(WEB)

This verse describes God setting the lonely into families. If you serve somewhere without close relationships, look for one small household to share a meal with this week, and let it become a place where God’s care takes a human form.

Hebrews 13:5

Be free from the love of money, content with such things as you have, for he has said, “I will in no way leave you, neither will I in any way forsake you.”

(WEB)

The writer reminds believers that God will never leave or forsake them, and that is enough to rest on. At the end of a lonely evening, read this verse before sleep and name one person you are thankful for by name.

Verses for Weariness and Slow Fruit

Many missionaries labor for years with few visible results. These verses speak to exhaustion and to the long patience that faithful work requires.

Galatians 6:9

Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up.

(WEB)

Paul encourages believers not to grow tired of doing good, because a harvest will come in its season. On a discouraging week, write down one small good thing you did that day and remember that the seeds you plant may take a long time to show.

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

This verse promises renewed strength to those who wait on the Lord, even when the young grow faint. When your energy is spent, set aside a quiet ten minutes to rest in God’s presence rather than pushing harder.

2 Corinthians 4:16

Therefore we don’t faint, but though our outward man is decaying, yet our inward man is renewed day by day.

(WEB)

Paul admits that his outer body is wasting away while his inner life is renewed each day. If your body is tired from heat, illness or travel, read this verse and ask God to renew your inner person even when your schedule cannot change.

Psalm 126:5

Those who sow in tears will reap in joy.

(WEB)

The psalmist links tears of sowing with joyful reaping. When you are sowing in grief or frustration, let this verse remind you that the work is not wasted, and keep a notebook of small answers you see along the way.

How to Use These Verses

Write the verses you need most on index cards or in the notes app on your phone, so they are with you when you travel, teach or sit in a crowded market. Choose one verse each morning before you begin your work, and carry it into the first hard conversation of the day rather than saving it for a crisis.

Read them aloud when you pray, especially in a second language if that is your daily tongue. Many missionaries find that hearing a promise spoken in their own voice makes it easier to believe. Pray the verse back to God by name, asking him to do what he has said.

A Short Prayer for Missionaries

Lord, you sent me, and you know the road I am walking. When fear rises in a strange place, remind me of your nearness and steady my heart. When loneliness settles in, let me feel your company and be glad for the people you have placed around me. When my strength runs low and the fruit is slow, renew me and keep me faithful to the work you gave. Help me trust that you are already at work in the places I cannot see. Amen.
