This list gives missionaries a set of Bible verses to read each day, whether you are serving across a border, in a city far from home, or in the ordinary work of a small church plant. The verses are grouped by the situations missionaries face most often: the morning before a hard conversation, the long stretch of waiting for results, the ache of distance from family, and the need to keep going when the work feels unseen. Taken together, they point to one steady truth: God sends, goes with, and sustains the people he calls.

Verses for the Morning Before You Leave the House

Many missionaries start the day with a long list of tasks, language practice, and people waiting at the door. These verses frame the day around God’s presence before the first appointment begins, so that the work becomes an answer to his call rather than a weight you carry alone.

Matthew 28:19-20

19 Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I commanded you. Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

(WEB)

This is the sending charge that gives missionary work its purpose. Before you step out, read it aloud and name the person or village you will serve today, so the command becomes specific to your own street and your own hours.

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

When you leave home, the going and the coming are both under God’s watch. Ask him to keep you as you walk to the bus, the clinic, or the market, and thank him for each safe arrival at the end of the day.

Isaiah 6:8

I heard the Lord’s voice, saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here I am. Send me!”

(WEB)

Isaiah’s answer, “Here I am,” is a short prayer you can say at the kitchen table before the day starts. Write it on a card in your bag and say it again when you meet someone you did not expect to meet.

Verses for the Hard Conversation and the Long Silence

Missionary work often means speaking truth to people who resist it, or waiting months for a single sign of openness. These verses steady the heart in both moments, reminding you that the outcome belongs to God and that faithfulness is your part.

1 Corinthians 3:6-7

6 I planted. Apollos watered. But God gave the increase. 7 So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase.

(WEB)

Paul names the roles clearly: one plants, another waters, and God gives the growth. When a year passes with little visible fruit, remind yourself that your task was to plant faithfully, and then let the watering and the harvest rest in his hands.

Galatians 6:9

Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up.

(WEB)

Paul writes to people who are tired of doing good. Pick one small act of faithfulness this week, such as a visit, a prayer letter, or a Bible study lesson, and count it as sowing toward a harvest you may not see yet.

Romans 8:26

In the same way, the Spirit also helps our weaknesses, for we don’t know how to pray as we ought. But the Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings which can’t be uttered.

(WEB)

Some days you will have no words for the people you serve or the burden you carry. Paul says the Spirit prays on your behalf when you cannot. Let silence be a form of prayer, and trust that someone is interceding even when you feel empty.

Psalm 40:1-3

1 I waited patiently for the LORD. He turned to me, and heard my cry. 2 He brought me up also out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay. He set my feet on a rock, and gave me a firm place to stand. 3 He has put a new song in my mouth, even praise to our God. Many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.

(WEB)

The psalmist waited patiently and was lifted from a pit onto solid ground. Write down a discouragement you have been carrying, then add a line of thanks for one place where God has already steadied your feet.

Verses for Homesickness, Distance, and Family Far Away

Missionaries often serve far from parents, children, and old friends, and the grief of that separation can arrive without warning. These verses name God’s nearness in the places where home feels most distant.

Deuteronomy 31:6

Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or scared of them; for the LORD your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you.”

(WEB)

Moses speaks these words to a people about to enter unfamiliar land. Repeat the phrase “he will not leave you” when a video call ends or a holiday passes without your family beside you.

Psalm 139:9-10

9 If I take the wings of the dawn, and settle in the uttermost parts of the sea; 10 Even there your hand will lead me, and your right hand will hold me.

(WEB)

David imagines going to the farthest edge of the sea and still finding God there. When you feel the distance from home, picture God already present in the new place, leading and holding you there.

Hebrews 13:5

Be free from the love of money, content with such things as you have, for he has said, “I will in no way leave you, neither will I in any way forsake you.”

(WEB)

The promise of God’s unfailing presence is the same wherever you live. Write this verse on the inside cover of the notebook where you record prayer requests from people back home.

Psalm 27:13-14

13 I am still confident of this: I will see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living. 14 Wait for the LORD. Be strong, and let your heart take courage. Yes, wait for the LORD.

(WEB)

David expresses confidence that he will see God’s goodness in the land of the living, and then calls for patient waiting. Use these lines on evenings when you feel weary and need to hope again.

Verses for Renewal and Lasting Endurance

The work of a missionary is long and often costly. These verses call you to rest, renewal, and a steady strength that comes from God rather than from your own effort.

Isaiah 40:29-31

29 He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might. 30 Even the youths faint and get weary, and the young men utterly fall; 31 But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Isaiah describes strength given to the weary and renewal for those who wait on the Lord. On the day you feel completely spent, step away for a walk or a rest, and ask God to renew what you cannot renew by yourself.

2 Corinthians 4:16-18

16 Therefore we don’t faint, but though our outward man is decaying, yet our inward man is renewed day by day. 17 For our light affliction, which is for the moment, works for us more and more exceedingly an eternal weight of glory; 18 while we don’t look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal.

(WEB)

Paul admits that the outer self wastes away while the inner self is renewed day by day. Keep a short list of small renewals you notice each week, such as a kind word from a neighbor or a breakthrough in language learning.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul invites believers to bring every worry to God with thanksgiving. When your list of needs grows long at night, pray through it item by item, thanking God for his past faithfulness before you ask for more.

Matthew 11:28-30

28 “Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

(WEB)

Jesus invites the weary to come to him and find rest. Set aside one hour this week that belongs to no ministry task, and spend it resting in his presence.

Joshua 1:9

Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

(WEB)

God tells Joshua to be strong and courageous because he goes with him. Speak this verse aloud before you enter a difficult meeting, a border crossing, or a conversation you have been dreading.

How to Use These Verses

Choose three or four verses from this list that match the season you are in, and write them on cards or in a notebook you keep with you. Read one card each morning, then carry it through the day by returning to it during a pause, such as a commute, a meal, or a quiet moment before bed.

Pray the verses rather than only reading them. Turn a phrase into a request, such as “Lord, go before me into this meeting,” and then thank him for what you see. Share one verse with a prayer partner or your sending church each month so they can pray it over you while you serve.

A Short Prayer for Missionaries

Father, you sent your Son and you send us in his name. Meet me this morning with the same presence you promised to those who went before me. Steady my hands for the work in front of me, and give me words when I have none. Keep my family in your care, and remind me that you are already at work in the places I cannot yet see. Renew my strength day by day, and let my faithfulness be a small answer to your great faithfulness. Amen.
