This daily prayer for courage is for the mornings when you already know what the day will ask of you: a hard conversation, a difficult diagnosis, a job interview, a decision you have been putting off. Pray it first thing, while you still have a quiet minute, or whenever fear rises up and you need to remember where your strength comes from. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Daily Prayer for Courage

Lord, I wake up today already aware of what I am afraid of. There is the call I need to make, the meeting I dread, the question I do not know how to answer. My stomach tightens before I have even gotten out of bed. Please meet me in that tightness and remind me that I am not facing this day alone. You know every detail of what is ahead, and nothing in it has taken you by surprise.

Give me courage that is steady rather than showy. I do not need to feel brave in order to act bravely. Help me take the next honest step, speak the true word, and ask for help when I need it. Where I have been ashamed of my fear, untangle that shame and replace it with your patience. Where I have been tempted to run, slow my feet and steady my heart so I can stay present to the people in front of me. Let my courage be quiet enough that others can see your faithfulness through it. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am scared right now, and I am asking you for courage for the next hour. Be near me as I walk into this room and speak these words. Steady my breathing and steady my hands. Give me the strength to do the one thing in front of me, and trust you with the rest. Thank you that you do not leave me to face this alone. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Joshua 1:9

Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

(WEB)

When fear is loud, pray this verse slowly and let each phrase settle in. Ask God to remind you that his presence goes with you into the situation, not only after it is over.

Psalm 27:1

The LORD is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life. Of whom shall I be afraid?

(WEB)

Use this verse to name what you are afraid of, then declare with it who the Lord is to you. Let him be the light and stronghold your fear keeps forgetting.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by repeating God’s promises back to him in your own words. Ask him to help you believe that his strength is enough for the particular hour you are facing.

2 Timothy 1:7

For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.

(WEB)

This verse helps when you feel timid or unsure of your voice. Pray for the spirit of power, love and self-control it describes, and ask God to grow those things in you today.

Psalm 56:3

When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.

(WEB)

Let this verse become a simple prayer you can whisper in a difficult moment. Tell God the exact moment you feel afraid, and choose to trust him in that moment rather than after.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular time and place for this prayer, such as while your coffee is brewing or in your car before you walk into work. Keep a printed copy or a note on your phone so you can find it on hard mornings. Speaking it out loud often helps more than reading it silently, because your body hears the words along with your heart. If your fear is tied to a specific situation, name that situation when you reach the middle of the prayer.

Consider writing the prayer by hand once a week, or pray it with a friend or spouse who can ask how the day went. Something as simple as opening your hands, palms up, while you pray can help you release what you are carrying. Return to the prayer at the end of the day too, and thank God for the small ways courage showed up, even if it did not feel like much at the time.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you and stand beside you in every hard conversation and every unknown step. May he steady your heart when it trembles and give you words when you have none. May you rest in the truth that you are known, held and not forsaken, and may that peace go with you into the day.
