This daily prayer for family health is written for the morning or evening when you want to bring the people you love before God and ask for their bodies, minds and days to be held in his care. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words, adding the names and needs of the people in your home.

Daily Prayer for Family Health

Lord, you know every person in this house by name. You know the ache in someone’s back, the cough that will not quite leave, the worry sitting quietly in the chest of the one who never says anything. Today I bring each of them to you. Be near to them in their sleep and in their waking. Give strength to those who are tired, comfort to those who are sick, and wisdom to those of us who are trying to care for them without knowing exactly what to do.

Father, I ask for healing where it is needed and for steadiness where healing is slow. Guard our bodies from harm and our hearts from fear. Help us to eat, rest, move and care for ourselves in ways that honor the gift of the body you have given. Where there are doctors, nurses and medicines, give us the sense to use them well and the humility to ask for help. Where there is pain we cannot fix, remind us that you are not absent from it. Keep us close to you through every day, whatever it brings. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, you see my family right now, the ones who are sick, the ones who are worried, and the ones I cannot reach. Hold each of them in your hands. Give them rest, give them strength, and give me the calm to trust that you are already at work. Keep us safe today and close to you. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 103:2-3

2 Praise the LORD, my soul, and don’t forget all his benefits; 3 who forgives all your sins; who heals all your diseases…

(WEB)

Pray this as a reminder to bless the Lord for every kindness shown to your family, including the ones you have already seen. Then ask him to continue the healing he has begun, naming each person as you go.

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Use this verse when you are anxious about someone leaving the house or traveling. Pray that the Lord would keep their going out and their coming in, and let that promise settle your own fear.

Isaiah 40:29-31

29 He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might. 30 Even the youths faint and get weary, and the young men utterly fall; 31 But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Read this slowly over anyone who is weary, whether from illness, caregiving or long hours. Ask God to give them new strength, and pray for your own tired heart in the same breath.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Bring this invitation to the members of your household who carry heavy burdens. Ask Jesus to draw them close and to let them set down what they were never meant to carry alone.

James 5:14-15

14 Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the assembly, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord, 15 and the prayer of faith will heal him who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.

(WEB)

When someone in your family is seriously ill, this passage points to prayer together and to asking others to pray with you. Pray it over the sick person and ask God to restore them in his time.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many families find it helpful to pray this prayer at the kitchen table over breakfast or at bedtime beside the sleeping children. Keep a small notebook nearby, and as you pray, write down the names of anyone who is sick or struggling. Revisit the list each week and note any changes, both the hard and the hopeful, so you can thank God for what he has done.

You might also pray it with your hands busy: folding laundry, preparing a meal, or holding the hand of an aging parent. Invite a spouse, a child or a friend to pray the parts that name each family member, so the words become shared rather than carried by one person alone.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless each person in this family and keep them in body and spirit. May he be a steady presence in every hard hour and a quiet joy in every ordinary one. May his peace guard their hearts today, and may they know they are never out of his sight.
