This daily prayer for our nation is for anyone who wants to bring their country before God each day, whether you feel hopeful, worried, weary or simply responsible. Pray it in the morning with your coffee, at lunch, or in the evening as you look back on the day. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Daily Prayer for Our Nation

Lord, you are the God over every nation and every ruler, and you know the name of every person who calls this country home. We come to you today for the people who govern, for the leaders in our towns and in our capital, and for the judges, teachers, police officers, nurses and soldiers who carry heavy responsibilities. Give them wisdom that is not their own, honesty that holds under pressure, and a love for the common good that outlasts the next election. Guard them from pride and from fear.

We also pray for the people who are struggling in our land. Be near to the family who is behind on rent, the veteran who cannot sleep, the young person who feels there is no future, and the immigrant who is trying to belong. Heal the divisions that have turned neighbors into strangers, and teach us to listen before we speak. Where there is injustice, stir our consciences to act with mercy, and where there is hunger or loneliness, make us the ones who notice and respond.

Father, forgive us where we have been selfish, where we have spoken cruelly about those we disagree with, and where we have looked away from suffering. Let our nation be a place where truth is valued, the weak are protected, and your peace can be seen in ordinary streets and kitchens. We trust that you are still at work, even when the news feels discouraging. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, you reign over this nation and over all the earth. Be with our leaders today, give wisdom to those who must decide, and comfort those who are hurting in our communities. Teach us to love our neighbors well and to seek justice with humility. Let your peace reach into our homes and workplaces, and let us be people who pray for this land and serve it faithfully. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

1 Timothy 2:1-2

1 I exhort therefore, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and givings of thanks, be made for all men: 2 for kings and all who are in high places; that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and reverence.

(WEB)

Paul asks that prayers be made for all people and especially for those in authority. Use this verse to name your leaders by role and by name, asking God to give them peace and clarity so that ordinary life can go on quietly and well.

Jeremiah 29:7

Seek the peace of the city where I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray to the LORD for it; for in its peace you will have peace.”

(WEB)

Jeremiah wrote to exiles who were tempted to despise the city where they lived. Pray this for your own town and nation, asking God to bless its streets, its businesses and its people, because your own welfare is tied up with theirs.

Psalm 33:12

Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people whom he has chosen for his own inheritance.

(WEB)

This psalm celebrates a people whose confidence rests in the Lord rather than in armies or wealth. Pray it as a request that our nation would look to God for its security and identity, and not only to its own strength.

Proverbs 14:34

Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people.

(WEB)

Proverbs links the health of a nation with righteousness and warns that sin brings disgrace. Ask God to shape the hearts of the people, so that justice and honesty would grow in homes, markets and public life alike.

Micah 6:8

He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does the LORD require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

(WEB)

Micah sums up what the Lord asks of his people in three simple things. Pray that our nation would act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with God, beginning with the way you treat the people you meet today.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular time, such as just after you wake up or during your commute, and keep it short enough that you can return to it every day. Some people find it helps to hold a newspaper, a flag, or a photo of their town in their hands while they pray, so that the prayer stays grounded in real places and real people. If you are praying with a family or small group, take turns reading one paragraph each.

Invite others to pray with you, whether a spouse, a friend, or a church community that meets weekly. Let the prayer lead you to small acts of care, like writing a note to a local official, volunteering at a food pantry, or simply speaking with respect to someone who holds different views. Prayer for our nation is most honest when it sends us back into our neighborhoods.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who rules over every nation keep your heart steady and your hope anchored in him. May he grant wisdom to those who lead, comfort to those who grieve, and courage to those who work for justice. May his peace settle over your home, your town and your country, and may you be a faithful light wherever he has placed you today.
