This page offers daily prayers for first responders, including firefighters, paramedics, police officers, dispatchers and emergency nurses. Pray it at the start of a shift, in the car on the way in, or during a quiet moment before a call comes through. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Daily Prayers for First Responders

Lord, you know what waits for me when I walk through the station door today. You know the calls I will answer, the people I will meet on the worst day of their lives, and the things I will see that I cannot unsee. Steady my hands and clear my mind. Give me the training to act quickly and the calm to think clearly when everything around me is loud and fast. Protect my partners on the crew and the people I serve, and let me come home to my family at the end of the shift.

I also bring you the weight I carry from past calls. Some nights I lie awake replaying what happened, and some memories show up uninvited in ordinary moments. Meet me in those places. Help me name what I am feeling without shame, and give me people I can trust to talk to. Where I have been hardened, soften me again, so that I can still care for the next person with compassion. Keep my heart tender and my courage strong.

Be near my family while I am away. Watch over the ones waiting by the phone and the ones who lie awake when I am on shift. Give my loved ones patience with the hours I keep and the moods I bring home. Guide my decisions today, from the smallest choice to the one that could change a life, and let me rest in knowing that I do not serve alone. Thank you for going with me into every door I open. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am heading into this shift and I need you. Give me clear thinking, steady hands and a calm voice. Protect my crew, protect the people I am called to help, and bring me home tonight. Let me carry what I see without being crushed by it. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 46:1

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when you feel the ground shifting under you, whether that means a chaotic scene or a long night. Ask God to be your refuge in the moment and to remind you that you are not facing the danger alone.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Read this before you walk into a scene you dread. Speak it as a promise to yourself and your crew, asking God to strengthen your resolve and to hold you steady when your own strength runs low.

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Pray this for your going out and your coming in. Ask God to keep watch over you on the road, in the building, and on the drive home, and to guard the people you love while you are gone.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Use this passage when anxiety about the shift starts to build. Bring each worry to God in specific words, and ask for the peace that steadies the mind when the next call comes in.

Joshua 1:9

Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

(WEB)

Pray this as a reminder of God’s command to be strong and courageous. Ask for courage for the hard moments and for the wisdom to know when to act and when to wait for the team.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many first responders find it helpful to pray at the start of a shift, while sitting in the vehicle before stepping out, or during the walk into the station. Keep your hands busy with something familiar, like your gloves, your keys or your radio, so your body stays grounded while your heart speaks. If you work a night rotation, you might pray it again around the hours when fatigue is heaviest.

You can also pray this prayer with your crew, your chaplain or a trusted friend who knows the job. A partner might read it aloud while you listen, or each person might add a name or a need before the shift begins. Praying together builds trust and reminds everyone that the work is shared, both on the call and in the burden it leaves behind.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into every scene and stand beside you in every hard moment. May he steady your hands, sharpen your mind and guard your heart. May you return home safe to the people who are waiting for you, and may you rest in the peace that only God can give.
