These daily prayers for pastors are written for anyone who wants to lift up a pastor, elder, or church leader before God, whether that is a member of the congregation, a spouse, a friend, or a fellow minister. Pray the main prayer each morning before the week begins, or on Sunday as the service approaches. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words where a line feels too general.
Daily Prayers for Pastors
Father, I come to you on behalf of the pastors who shepherd your people. Some of them are awake before dawn, going over a sermon they have not yet finished, or lying still while a hard phone call replays in their mind. Give them rest that is real, the kind that lets them sleep without carrying every name on their list. Guard their marriages and their children, and give their families a sense that they are loved for who they are and not only for the role they hold.
Lord, give them wisdom for the decisions that will never appear in a bulletin: who to visit this week, which conflict to address now and which to leave alone, when to say no. Let their words be clear enough for a tired farmer, a grieving widow, and a teenager who is not sure he believes any of it. Where they feel unqualified, remind them that you have never called the qualified but qualified the called. Protect them from pride when people praise them and from despair when people walk away. Keep their hearts soft toward you, and let their own prayer life be deeper than their preaching. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, bless my pastor today. Give them strength for what is in front of them and rest for what they cannot carry. Speak clearly through them, guard their family, and keep them close to you when the work feels heavy. Let them see the fruit of their faithfulness, even if it is slow to appear. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Ephesians 4:11-12
11 He gave some to be apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, shepherds and teachers; 12 for the perfecting of the saints, to the work of serving, to the building up of the body of Christ…
(WEB)
Pray that your pastor will see their role as a gift given to build others up, not a stage on which to prove themselves. Ask God to keep them focused on equipping the people in front of them.
Hebrews 13:17
Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they watch on behalf of your souls, as those who will give account, that they may do this with joy, and not with groaning, for that would be unprofitable for you.
(WEB)
Pray that the pastor will watch over souls with joy rather than dread, and that the congregation will respond with willing, supportive hearts. This verse holds both their burden and yours.
1 Thessalonians 5:12-13
12 But we beg you, brothers, to know those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you, 13 and to respect and honor them in love for their work’s sake. Be at peace among yourselves.
(WEB)
Ask God to help you recognize and honor the work your pastor does among you. Pray that appreciation and peace will grow between the leader and the people who love them.
Psalm 127:1
Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain.
(WEB)
Pray that your pastor will rest in the truth that the church is God’s building and not theirs alone. This can loosen the grip of anxiety over results that only the Lord can produce.
Acts 20:28
Take heed, therefore, to yourselves, and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the assembly of the Lord and God which he purchased with his own blood.
(WEB)
Pray that your pastor will keep watch over themselves as well as the flock. Ask God to guard their own soul, since a leader who neglects their inner life cannot sustain care for others.
How to Pray This Prayer
Many people find early morning works best, before the phone starts ringing and the day’s demands take over. Choose a quiet chair, or pray while you make your coffee and keep one hand on the mug as a reminder to pause. If you can, write your pastor’s name on a slip of paper and tuck it somewhere you will see it, such as the kitchen window or the dashboard, so that the prayer returns to you during the day.
You do not have to pray this alone. Invite your spouse, a small group, or a friend from church to pray the same words on the same morning, and let each person add a line of their own. Consider sending your pastor a brief text afterward saying that you prayed for them, which often means more than any other word of encouragement that week.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who called your pastor to this work keep them steady and sustained, and may they hear his voice above every other voice that competes for their attention. May they find joy in the small faithfulness of ordinary weeks, and may they know, even on the hardest days, that they are not carrying this alone.
