Daniel 12 is the closing chapter of the book of Daniel. It looks ahead to a time of great trouble, the resurrection of the dead, and the reward of the wise, and it ends with a personal word to Daniel himself. These questions are written for a small group, a Sunday class, or personal study, and each one comes with a leader’s note so you can move through the chapter without preparing a separate summary.

Daniel 12 at a Glance

The chapter opens with a messenger figure named Michael standing up for God’s people in a time of unequaled trouble, and with the promise that everyone whose name is written in the book will be delivered. The focus then shifts to the dead, some raised to everlasting life and others to shame, followed by a picture of the wise shining like the sky and the stars.

The second half moves to a scene at the river. Daniel hears a question about how long these things will take, receives an answer about a time, times and half a time, and asks for clarity but is told the words are sealed until the end. The chapter closes with instructions about two periods of days, a blessing on the one who waits, and a final assurance to Daniel that he will rest and stand in his inheritance.

Observation Questions

Use these questions first, before anyone offers an interpretation. Ask group members to point to specific words in the text and to resist explaining yet. Let the silences sit for a moment, and write down what people notice.

Daniel 12:1-2

1 “At that time Michael will stand up, the great prince who stands for the children of your people; and there will be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time. At that time your people will be delivered, everyone who is found written in the book. 2 Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.

Read these verses first to set the tone for the session. They introduce the figure of Michael, the time of trouble, the deliverance of God’s people, and the resurrection of the dead. Hearing them aloud helps the group hold the whole arc of the chapter in mind before the questions begin.

Daniel 12:3

Those who are wise will shine as the brightness of the expanse. Those who turn many to righteousness will shine as the stars forever and ever.

This short verse names the reward of the wise and of those who lead others to righteousness. Reading it aloud gives the group a clear picture to discuss in connection with the application questions about light and influence.

Daniel 12:6-7

6 One said to the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, “How long will it be to the end of these wonders?” 7 I heard the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand to heaven, and swore by him who lives forever that it will be for a time, times, and a half; and when they have finished breaking in pieces the power of the holy people, all these things will be finished.

These verses carry the scene at the river, the question of timing, and the solemn oath. Hearing the oath spoken aloud lets people feel its weight and prepares them for the discussion of how God answers the question of how long.

Daniel 12:9-10

9 He said, “Go your way, Daniel; for the words are shut up and sealed until the time of the end. 10 Many will purify themselves, and make themselves white, and be refined; but the wicked will do wickedly; and none of the wicked will understand; but those who are wise will understand.

Reading the instruction to Daniel and the description of the purified and the wicked gives the group the material for the interpretation questions about sealed words and moral understanding. Pause after these verses so people can consider the contrast before moving on.

Daniel 12:13

“But go you your way until the end; for you will rest, and will stand in your inheritance at the end of the days.”

(WEB)

End the reading with the closing word to Daniel. Its promise of rest and an inheritance gives the group a hopeful note to carry into the closing prayer and into the week ahead.

Memory Verse for Daniel 12

A Closing Prayer for the Group

Father, we thank you that you stand with your people in every time of trouble, and that you know by name those who belong to you. Give us wisdom to understand what we can, patience to wait for what remains sealed, and humility to rest in your faithfulness. Make us the kind of people who turn others toward righteousness, so that our lives reflect your light in ordinary places. As Daniel was told to go his way until the end, help us to keep walking with you one day at a time. Grant us the rest and inheritance you have promised. Amen.
