This lesson teaches children that God knows everything, even the secrets we cannot see, and that He can be trusted to help us when we ask. It works well for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

Big Idea

God knows all things, and He is the one who can show us what we cannot figure out ourselves. When we ask Him for help, He hears us and answers.

Memory Verse

Daniel 2:21

He changes the times and the seasons. He removes kings, and sets up kings. He gives wisdom to the wise, and knowledge to those who have understanding.

Have the children stand up and point up to the sky on the word “wisdom,” then cross their arms over their chests on the word “knowledge.” Repeat the motions together three times so the verse starts to sound like a little song.

The Story: Daniel 2 for Kids

King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon had a strange dream one night. When he woke up, he could not remember what he had seen, but he knew it had frightened him. He was so troubled that he could not sleep again.

The king called in his wise men, the magicians and astrologers, and asked them to tell him the dream and what it meant. They said, “Tell us the dream, O king, and we will explain it.” The king said, “No, you must tell me what I dreamed first. If you cannot, you will be cut in pieces!” The wise men were stuck, because nobody could know a secret like that.

The king became so angry that he ordered all the wise men of Babylon to be put to death. Daniel and his three friends, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, were among the wise men too, so they were in danger as well. Daniel was not afraid. He asked the king for a little time, and then he went home and told his friends to pray.

That night, God showed Daniel the secret in a vision. Daniel was so thankful that he praised God right away. He said, “Blessed be the name of God forever, for wisdom and might are His.” Then Daniel went to the king and said, “There is a God in heaven who reveals secrets, and He has shown me your dream.”

Daniel described a great statue with a head of gold, a chest and arms of silver, and legs of iron with feet partly clay. Then a stone cut without hands struck the statue and broke it to pieces, and the stone grew into a mountain that filled the whole earth. Daniel explained that the kingdoms would rise and fall, but God’s kingdom would last forever.

The king fell on his face and said, “Truly, your God is the God of gods and the Lord of kings, because He can reveal secrets.” The king made Daniel a great ruler, and the wise men were saved.

Read It Together

Daniel 2:19

Then the secret was revealed to Daniel in a vision of the night. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven.

(WEB)

Point out that Daniel did not get the answer by being clever. The secret was revealed to him in a vision during the night, and he responded by blessing God. Ask the children how they think Daniel felt when God answered his prayer.

Daniel 2:28

But there is a God in heaven who reveals secrets, and he has made known to the king Nebuchadnezzar what will be in the latter days. Your dream, and the visions of your head on your bed, are these…

(WEB)

Show the children that Daniel was clear about where the answer came from. He told the king that the God in heaven is the one who reveals secrets. Help children see that God is the true source of wisdom.

Daniel 2:44

“In the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which will never be destroyed, nor will its sovereignty be left to another people; but it will break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it will stand forever.

(WEB)

Explain that the kings of the world come and go, but God’s kingdom will never be destroyed. Let the children know that God’s promises last even when everything else changes around us.

Talk About It

  • What did King Nebuchadnezzar want from his wise men, and why couldn’t they help him?
  • How did Daniel and his friends respond when they were in trouble?
  • What did Daniel do first after God showed him the secret?
  • Why do you think God wanted the king to know that He is the one who reveals secrets?
  • When is a time you have asked God for help, and how did you see Him at work?

Activity Ideas

Draw the Statue

You will need paper, crayons or colored pencils, and a pencil. Ask each child to draw Daniel’s statue with a gold head, silver chest and arms, bronze belly and thighs, iron legs, and feet that are part iron and part clay. Then have them draw a small stone at the bottom to show the stone that broke the statue. Let them talk about the picture as they color it.

Stone Toss Game

You will need a few soft balls or rolled-up socks and a box or bucket. Set the box a few steps away and have the children take turns tossing the balls into it, while the group calls out “God knows everything!” each time someone scores. Explain that just like the stone in Daniel’s dream, God’s kingdom is strong and nothing can stop it.

Secret Message Card

You will need an index card, a marker, and an envelope. Have each child write or draw a secret prayer request on the card, then seal it in the envelope and take it home. Encourage them to pray over the card each night that week, reminding them that God knows every secret of their heart and hears every prayer.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this chapter shows that God alone reveals hidden things and that human wisdom, however impressive, has limits. Daniel’s response models humble dependence on God, who gives wisdom to those who ask. The passage also reminds us that earthly kingdoms rise and fall while God’s kingdom endures forever.

Avoid overstating the details of the statue and its kingdoms to children, since the interpretation is complex and the focus for young learners should be on God’s knowledge and faithfulness. Keep the emphasis on what God does and how He cares for those who trust Him.

A Prayer to Close

Dear God, thank You that You know everything, even the secrets we cannot see. Help us to trust You when we do not understand, and to thank You when You answer our prayers. Thank You that Your kingdom will last forever. Amen.
