This lesson teaches children that they can trust God and stay faithful to Him even when it is hard, because God is with His people in every fire. It suits children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes, including the story, a memory verse, and an activity.
Big Idea
God is with us when we choose to obey Him, even when obeying is scary. We do not have to be afraid, because God is stronger than any fire.
Memory Verse
Daniel 3:17
If it happens, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace; and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king.

Have the children stand tall with their feet planted wide, like a tree with strong roots. Then have them raise both arms slowly toward the sky as they say the verse together, and hold the pose for a moment on the word “deliver.” Repeat it three times, getting a little quieter each time.
The Story: Daniel 3 for Kids
Long ago, a powerful king named Nebuchadnezzar built a huge statue made of gold. It was taller than a tall tree and shone in the sun. He invited all the important leaders of his land to come to the big party where the statue would be shown.
When the music played, the king told everyone that they must bow down and worship the golden statue. He said that anyone who refused would be thrown into a blazing furnace, a hot oven made of fire. So when the music started, all the people bowed down to the statue, just as the king had said.
But three young men named Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego would not bow down. They loved God and knew that only God deserved to be worshiped. Some of the king’s advisors noticed and went to tell the king about them. The king was very angry and called the three men to come before him.
The king asked them, “Why won’t you bow down? Are you ready to bow when you hear the music?” The three friends answered calmly that God was able to save them from the fire, but even if He did not, they would still not worship the statue. The king became furious and ordered the furnace to be heated seven times hotter than usual.
The three friends were tied up and thrown into the fire. The fire was so hot that the soldiers who threw them in were harmed. But the king looked into the furnace and was amazed. He saw not three men but four, walking around in the fire, and none of them were hurt!
The king called the three friends out of the furnace. They came out unharmed, and not even their hair or clothes smelled of smoke. The king praised their God, and he promoted the three friends to important jobs in his land.
Read It Together
Daniel 3:16-18
16 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answered the king, “Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter. 17 If it happens, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace; and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king. 18 But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image which you have set up.”

Point out how the three friends answered the king calmly and bravely, without arguing or getting angry. Ask children to notice that they trusted God and stood firm even though they could not be sure what would happen next.
Daniel 3:24-25
24 Then Nebuchadnezzar the king was astonished, and rose up in haste. He spoke and said to his counselors, “Didn’t we cast three men bound into the middle of the fire?” They answered the king, “True, O king.” 25 He answered, “Look, I see four men loose, walking in the middle of the fire, and they are unharmed. The appearance of the fourth is like a son of the gods.”

Show children that the king was surprised to see the men walking in the fire without being hurt. Explain that God was with His people in the middle of their trouble, even when they could not see Him.
Daniel 3:28
Nebuchadnezzar spoke and said, “Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who has sent his angel, and delivered his servants who trusted in him, and have changed the king’s word, and have yielded their bodies, that they might not serve nor worship any god, except their own God.

Help children see that the king praised the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego after witnessing what happened. Point out that God’s faithfulness to His people made a big impression on someone who did not yet know Him.
Talk About It
- What did the three friends do when the king told everyone to bow down, and why do you think they made that choice?
- How do you think Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego felt when they were standing in front of the angry king?
- What is something that might be hard for you to do because you love God, like telling the truth or being kind when others are not?
- Who was in the fire with the three friends, and what does that tell us about how God treats us when we are in trouble?
- What are some ways you can remember that God is with you when things feel scary?
Activity Ideas
Golden Statue Craft
You will need paper, gold or yellow crayons or markers, scissors, and glue. Have each child draw and cut out a tall, shiny statue shape, then color it gold and add sparkles or glitter if you have some. Glue the statue to a piece of construction paper, and talk together about why it was wrong for the people to worship it instead of God.
Fiery Furnace Freeze Game
Clear a space in the room and mark one side as the furnace. Play some music, and while it plays, the children move around freely like they are dancing. When the music stops, they must freeze, and anyone who does not freeze must sit out, just as the friends refused to bow. Then say that the friends stood firm, and celebrate children who choose to listen to God even when it is hard.
Strong in the Fire Card
You will need index cards, markers, and a pencil. Have each child write “God is with me” on one side and draw a small picture of a friend standing strong on the other side. Encourage them to take the card home and keep it in a pocket, backpack, or by their bed, and to read it aloud whenever they feel afraid.
Teacher Notes
For adults, this chapter shows that faithfulness to God can cost something, yet God remains present with His people in the hardest circumstances. The three friends did not know whether God would rescue them from the furnace, yet they chose to trust Him regardless. The story also shows that God’s care for His people can lead others to honor Him.
With children, be careful not to suggest that obeying God always guarantees a happy or safe outcome in this life. The friends said that even if God did not save them, they would still remain faithful. Help children understand that God is always with us and always good, even when He does not give us the answer we hope for.
A Prayer to Close
Dear God, thank You for being with us in every hard place. Help us to stand strong and trust You, even when it is scary to do the right thing. Thank You that You never leave us alone. Amen.
