In this lesson, children learn that God knows what will happen in the future and is in control of every kingdom, even when things look scary. This lesson works well for ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach.
Big Idea
God is always in charge, and nothing in the world surprises Him. He keeps His promises even when we are scared.
Memory Verse
Daniel 8:14
He said to me, “To two thousand and three hundred evenings and mornings. Then the sanctuary will be cleansed.”
(WEB)
Have children hold both hands up, then slowly bring them together in front of their chest like a door closing. Each time you say “evenings and mornings,” let them tap their knees once for each word, so the motion helps them remember the rhythm of the verse.
The Story: Daniel 8 for Kids
One night, a man named Daniel had a dream full of strange pictures. In his vision, he stood by a river in a faraway city called Susa. He looked up and saw a big ram with two tall horns. The ram pushed in every direction, and no animal could stop him.
Then a fast goat came running from the west. It did not even touch the ground as it ran. The goat had one big horn between its eyes, and it charged straight at the ram. The goat knocked the ram down and stepped on him, and nobody could rescue the ram from the goat’s power.
Daniel heard two holy beings talking about the vision. One of them asked how long these things would last. The answer was that after a very long time, the holy place would be made clean again. Daniel wanted to understand what he was seeing, so he prayed for help.
An angel named Gabriel came to explain the dream. He told Daniel that the ram stood for the kings of Media and Persia, and the goat stood for the king of Greece. Daniel was so amazed that he fell asleep for a while, and when he woke up, he felt tired and sick for several days.
Gabriel said, “Understand, Daniel, because this vision is about the time of the end.” God wanted Daniel to know that He had already planned everything that would happen. Even the scary parts were part of His plan.
Read It Together
Daniel 8:3-4
3 Then I lifted up my eyes, and saw, and behold, there stood before the river a ram which had two horns. The two horns were high; but one was higher than the other, and the higher came up last. 4 I saw the ram pushing westward, northward, and southward. No animals could stand before him. There wasn’t any who could deliver out of his hand; but he did according to his will, and magnified himself.
(WEB)
Point out that the ram looked powerful and strong, and that the people in the story did not have any way to stop it. Remind children that even the strongest things in the world cannot stand against God’s plans.
Daniel 8:17
So he came near where I stood; and when he came, I was frightened, and fell on my face; but he said to me, “Understand, son of man; for the vision belongs to the time of the end.”
(WEB)
Show children how Daniel was scared and fell on his face, but Gabriel helped him stand up and understand. Explain that God sends help when we feel afraid, and that He is always near.
Daniel 8:27
I, Daniel, fainted, and was sick for some days. Then I rose up, and did the king’s business. I wondered at the vision, but no one understood it.
(WEB)
Note that Daniel got sick after the vision, but then he got back up and went back to his work for the king. Talk about how God helps us keep doing our everyday jobs, even after something big and confusing happens.
Talk About It
- What do you think Daniel felt when he saw the ram and the goat in his dream?
- Why do you think God showed Daniel these pictures before anything happened?
- What does it feel like when you are scared of something you do not understand?
- How did Gabriel help Daniel when he was afraid?
- What is one way you can remember that God is always in charge?
Activity Ideas
Draw Daniel’s Dream
Give each child a sheet of paper, crayons or markers, and a pencil. Ask them to draw the ram with two tall horns and the goat with one big horn between its eyes. Encourage them to add a river in the background and talk about each picture as they finish it.
Ram and Goat Freeze Game
Choose one child to be the ram and another to be the goat. Have everyone else form a circle around them. The goat tries to tag the ram, and when the goat tags the ram, everyone freezes like the story says nobody could stand against him. Play a few rounds, then talk about how God is stronger than any power in the world.
Take-Home Promise Card
Cut a piece of paper into a small card for each child. Ask them to write or draw one thing that reminds them God is in charge, such as a sun or a heart. Encourage them to keep the card in a pocket or on the bathroom mirror, and to show it to a family member during the week.
Teacher Notes
For adults, this chapter shows that God knows the future and that He is sovereign over all the powers of the earth. Daniel’s vision was given to encourage God’s people during a hard time, reminding them that God’s purposes will stand even when empires rise and fall. The chapter also shows that God sends messengers, like Gabriel, to help His servants understand what He is doing.
Be careful not to make the vision into a detailed timeline or a guessing game about specific dates or modern events. Children do not need to know the exact meaning of every symbol to learn that God is in control. Focus on the bigger truth that God is faithful and His plans are good.
A Prayer to Close
Lord, thank You that You know everything that will happen, and that nothing is too big for You. When we feel scared, help us remember that You are always with us. Help us trust You every day. Amen.
