Ephesians 1:17 is Paul’s prayer that God would give believers a spirit of wisdom and revelation so they can know him more deeply. In plain terms, Paul is asking for insight that goes beyond facts about God and into a real, personal knowing of who he is. The words come from the apostle Paul, who wrote to the church in Ephesus and to the believers who were part of it.

That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him…

What Ephesians 1:17 Means

The verse opens with “the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory.” Paul names God in relation to Jesus, which tells us that the God believers worship is the same God revealed through Christ. Calling him “the Father of glory” points to his splendor and majesty, the radiance that belongs to him by nature.

Next Paul asks that God “may give to you a spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him.” Wisdom here is more than cleverness. It is the ability to see life through God’s eyes and to act on what is true. Revelation means something has been made known that could not be grasped by effort alone. Paul’s aim is that the knowledge of God would be opened up to them, not simply gathered by study.

The verse is a prayer, not a guarantee of instant clarity on every question. It does not promise that believers will understand every mystery or never feel confused. What it does show is that spiritual understanding is a gift from God, and it is right to ask him for it.

The Context of Ephesians 1:17

Ephesians is a letter traditionally attributed to Paul, written to a community of Christians who had come to faith from both Jewish and Gentile backgrounds. The first half of the letter celebrates the blessings believers have in Christ, and Paul’s prayer in verses 15 through 23 flows directly out of that praise. He has just described the inheritance God has secured for his people.

Because of this setting, the verse reads as a request for deeper appreciation of what God has already given. Paul goes on in verse 18 to pray that the eyes of their hearts would be enlightened, so they could know the hope of God’s calling and the riches of his glory. The wisdom he asks for is aimed at seeing those gifts clearly and living in light of them.

Key Phrases in Ephesians 1:17

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

James gives a practical companion to Paul’s prayer, inviting believers who lack wisdom to ask God, who gives generously. It shows that asking for wisdom is an expected and welcome part of the Christian life.

Colossians 1:9-10

9 For this cause, we also, since the day we heard this, don’t cease praying and making requests for you, that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, 10 that you may walk worthily of the Lord, to please him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God…

Paul prays in similar terms for the Colossian church, asking that they be filled with knowledge of God’s will through spiritual wisdom and understanding. The parallel shows how central this kind of prayer was to his ministry.

A Short Prayer From Ephesians 1:17

Father of glory, I come to you as one who needs more than my own understanding. Give me a spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that I may see clearly what is true and act on it faithfully. Open the eyes of my heart to know you more deeply, not only in what I believe but in how I live and speak each day. Where I am confused or afraid, quiet my mind and teach me to trust your leading. Let every step I take grow out of a deeper knowing of who you are. Amen.
