Ephesians 4:13 teaches that God’s purpose for the church is maturity: that believers would grow together into a shared, settled trust in Jesus and a deep, personal knowledge of him, until they reflect his character in full. The verse is part of a letter the apostle Paul wrote to the churches in and around Ephesus, and it describes the goal of the gifts Christ gives to his people.

Until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a full grown man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ…

What Ephesians 4:13 Means

The verse opens with “until,” which tells you this is a destination, not a starting point. Paul is describing where the process of building up the church is meant to lead. The “unity of the faith” means believers holding the same core truths about Jesus together, not uniformity in every opinion. The “knowledge of the Son of God” points past information to relationship: knowing someone well is different from knowing facts about them.

The image of “a full grown man” is a picture of maturity, the difference between a child and an adult who can carry responsibility. The phrase “the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ” gives the standard. Growth is measured against Jesus himself, not against the culture or against other Christians. The verse does not promise that anyone will reach perfection in this life, and it does not say the process is quick or effortless. It describes the direction God is moving his people.

The Context of Ephesians 4:13

Ephesians is traditionally attributed to Paul, written to a community of believers who were mostly Gentiles and who were learning to live as one body with Jewish believers. Paul spends the first half of the letter explaining grace and the new unity Christ has created, then turns in chapter 4 to what that unity should look like in daily life. Verses 11 and 12 explain that Christ gave apostles, prophets, evangelists, shepherds and teachers to equip the saints for building up the body.

The verses right after 4:13 show the reason for growth: so that believers are no longer “tossed back and forth” by every new teaching or clever argument, but instead speak the truth in love and grow up into Christ, the head. Read this way, the verse is not a standalone ideal for individuals alone. It is the goal of a whole community learning to stand firm together.

Key Phrases in Ephesians 4:13

Philippians 3:12

Not that I have already obtained, or am already made perfect; but I press on, that I may take hold of that for which also I was taken hold of by Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul admits in this verse that he has not yet reached his goal, yet he keeps pressing forward. It pairs well with Ephesians 4:13 by reminding readers that the pursuit of maturity in Christ is ongoing and that Christ himself is the one who lays hold of believers.

2 Peter 3:18

But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and forever. Amen.

(WEB)

Peter urges his readers to grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ. This echoes the emphasis in Ephesians 4:13 on knowing the Son of God and shows that growth in knowledge is meant to be a lifelong, grace-filled pursuit.

A Short Prayer From Ephesians 4:13

Lord, I confess that I often want to stay where I feel comfortable in my faith, and I forget how much you want me to keep growing. Thank you for giving the church teachers, shepherds and companions who help us grow. Draw me closer to you so that I know your Son more truly each day. Keep me united with the people you have placed around me, and help me speak the truth in love. Shape me toward the fullness of Christ, step by step, until I reflect him more clearly. Amen.
