Ephesians 4:23 calls believers to let their thinking be renewed from the inside, so that their attitudes, priorities and habits begin to change at the root. The apostle Paul wrote this as part of a larger instruction to the church in Ephesus, urging Christians who had come to know Christ to live differently from the way they once did.

And that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind…

What Ephesians 4:23 Means

The verse is a call to change that starts in the mind. Paul is not describing a change of wardrobe or a new schedule. He is pointing to the way a person thinks, judges and interprets the world, and saying that this inner life needs to be made fresh. The word translated “renewed” carries the idea of being made new again, as a worn garment is restored or a faded thing is refreshed.

The phrase “the spirit of your mind” tells us where the work happens. Paul places renewal not only in outward behavior but in the deepest layer of how we reason, value and desire. Before a person can act in a new way, their habits of thought must begin to shift.

The verse does not promise that the change will be instant or effortless. It describes an ongoing process. Paul speaks in a way that assumes renewal is continuing work rather than a single event, and it is something believers take part in as they keep returning to God’s truth.

The Context of Ephesians 4:23

The letter to the Ephesians is traditionally attributed to the apostle Paul, written to Christians in and around the city of Ephesus, a busy port and center of trade and worship in the ancient world. The first three chapters explain the grace of God and the unity of Jew and Gentile in Christ, and chapter four turns to how that new identity should shape daily life.

Just before verse 23, Paul contrasts the old way of life with the way Christians learned Christ. In the verses surrounding it, he speaks of putting away falsehood and anger, and of putting on a new self created in righteousness and holiness. Read this way, the call to renew the mind is the inner side of an outward transformation. The mind is renewed so that a person can take off the old patterns and live truthfully with others.

Key Phrases in Ephesians 4:23

Romans 12:2

Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God.

Paul uses similar language here, urging believers not to be shaped by the pattern of this age but to be transformed by the renewing of their minds. Reading the two passages together shows how central the mind is to Christian growth.

Colossians 3:10

And have put on the new man, who is being renewed in knowledge after the image of his Creator…

This verse speaks of putting on the new self that is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its Creator. It echoes the Ephesians call to a fresh self shaped by God’s truth and helps show the ongoing nature of that renewal.

A Short Prayer From Ephesians 4:23

Lord, you know how easily my thoughts drift toward fear, pride and old habits that I have carried for years. I ask you to renew the spirit of my mind by your Spirit. Show me where my thinking has been shaped by things that do not reflect your truth, and help me to turn toward what is honest, good and right.

Make my mind fresh in the mornings and steady in the hard hours. Where I need to let go of resentment or worry, give me the courage to do so. Shape my thoughts so that they lead to a life that honors you. Amen.
