Ephesians 5:32 says that the marriage relationship Paul has just described is a great mystery, and that Paul is ultimately pointing to Christ and his church. In plain terms, the one-flesh union of husband and wife reflects a deeper union between Christ and the people he loves. Paul wrote this letter to the believers in Ephesus, and he wrote it as a pastor and apostle giving instructions for life in Christian households.

This mystery is great, but I speak concerning Christ and of the assembly.

What Ephesians 5:32 Means

The word “mystery” here does not mean a puzzle to be solved. In the New Testament, a mystery is something that was hidden in earlier times and has now been revealed in Christ. Paul is saying that the old scriptural picture of a man and woman becoming one flesh was never only about human marriage. It was pointing forward to something larger, the joining of Christ with his people.

When Paul writes “but I speak concerning Christ and of the assembly,” he is clarifying his own point. He is not rejecting the meaning of marriage in Genesis, which he has just quoted. He is saying that the reality it foreshadowed finds its fullest expression in the relationship between Christ and the church. The verse does not promise that every marriage will feel like this union, and it does not give a formula for a perfect relationship. It names a truth about what God is doing in the world and invites believers to live in light of it.

The Context of Ephesians 5:32

Ephesians was written by Paul, traditionally identified as the author, to a community of believers in Ephesus and to the wider churches of the region. The letter moves from a long explanation of God’s grace and the unity of Jew and Gentile in one body into practical instruction about how that new life should look at home, at work, and in the community. The household codes in chapters 5 and 6 belong to that practical section.

Just before verse 32, Paul compares a husband’s love for his wife to the way Christ nourishes and cherishes the church, and he reminds his readers that believers are members of Christ’s body. Just after verse 32, he returns to the call for each husband to love his wife and each wife to respect her husband. Because the verse sits between these two practical exhortations, it works as a theological anchor for them. Paul grounds ordinary marriage in the far greater story of Christ’s love for his people.

Key Phrases in Ephesians 5:32

Genesis 2:24

Therefore a man will leave his father and his mother, and will join with his wife, and they will be one flesh.

(WEB)

This is the original statement about a man leaving his parents and being joined to his wife. Paul quotes it in the verses just before Ephesians 5:32, and reading it in its original setting shows why he saw in it a pattern pointing to Christ and the church.

Revelation 19:7

Let us rejoice and be exceedingly glad, and let us give the glory to him. For the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his wife has made herself ready.”

(WEB)

This verse looks ahead to the wedding feast of the Lamb, bringing the image of marriage to its fullest expression in God’s future. It helps readers see that the union Paul describes is destined to be finally and gloriously realized.

A Short Prayer From Ephesians 5:32

Lord, thank you for the mystery of your love, which reaches down to join us to yourself. Help me to see that the love I give and receive in my closest relationships points toward something far greater than my own efforts. Where I have been distant, selfish, or weary, draw me back to your steady care. Shape my heart so that I can reflect your faithfulness to the people you have placed around me. Keep me close to you, and let my life tell the story of your love. Amen.
