This evening prayer is for parents, grandparents and others who love a grown son or daughter and carry them to God at the close of the day. It is meant to be prayed at bedtime, in the car on the drive home, or whenever the day’s worries come back to the surface. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words where your heart leads.
Evening Prayer for an Adult Child
Lord, the day is ending, and I bring you my son (or daughter) once more. You know where they went today, who they spoke with, and what they carried home with them. You know the job that feels uncertain, the bills that stretch the month thin, and the phone call they may have been dreading. I cannot fix any of it tonight, and I am learning that I was never meant to. Take these things from my hands and hold them in yours.
I ask you to watch over their rest. Where they are sleeping, whether under their own roof, in a shared apartment, or far away from home, let them lie down without fear. Quiet the thoughts that circle when the lights go off. Guard their health, their marriage if they have one, their friendships, and their faith when it feels thin. Keep them from harm on the roads and from the poor choices that come more easily in the dark.
Thank you for the ways you have been faithful to them today, even the ones they did not notice. Thank you for the years behind us and for the grace that has carried us both this far. Remind me, when I lie awake, that I can trust you with the parts of their life I cannot reach. Give me peace that rests on you, not on my own control. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, my child is grown, and tonight I release them into your care. Stand guard over their sleep and their heart. Forgive what needs forgiving, between them and you and between us. Give them rest, and give me rest too. Let morning come with new mercy for us both. Amen.

How to Pray This Prayer
Choose a fixed moment near the end of your day, such as after the dishes are done or once you are in bed with the light low. Sitting on the edge of the bed or in a favorite chair works well, and you might rest your hands open on your knees or hold a small object that reminds you of your child. Many parents find it helpful to keep a short list of current needs beside the bed so that the prayer stays specific.
If you share the household with a spouse or another loved one, pray this prayer together, taking turns with the lines. If you live apart from your child, you might pray it at the same hour each night and, when you can, text them a single line of the prayer or a verse so they know you are thinking of them. Keep praying even when you feel you have nothing new to say.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord keep your child tonight and every night, and may his face shine on them with grace. May they wake refreshed, knowing they are loved by God and by the ones who have prayed for them.
