This evening prayer is for the grandparents in your life, the ones whose health, memory, worries and daily strength you carry in your heart as the day winds down. Pray it at bedtime, at the kitchen table after supper, or during a late phone call with someone who is far away. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words about the particular people you love.

Evening Prayer for My Grandparents

Lord, thank you for this day and for the grandparents you have given us. Thank you for the hands that have held us, the stories they have told, and the patience they have shown us over the years. As evening comes, we bring them to you. Some of them are tired in body. Some are carrying worries about money, about their health, or about friends and family who have gone before them. Some are lonely in the quiet of an empty house. You know every one of those burdens by name.

Be near them tonight. Give them restful sleep and wake them refreshed in the morning. Where pain keeps them awake, comfort them. Where fear whispers in the dark, remind them that you do not sleep and do not slumber. Guard their homes and their bodies through the night. Let them feel your presence in the stillness, and let them know they are not forgotten by you or by us. Thank you for the years they have given us, and help us to honor them with our own love and care. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, thank you for my grandparents. Rest is hard for some of them tonight, so give them peace in their bodies and quiet in their minds. Keep them safe until morning, and let them feel how much they are loved. Hold them close in the dark, and bring them home to you when their time comes. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this verse over your grandparents as you think of them lying down to sleep. Ask God to give them the peaceful rest that only he can provide, especially on nights when worry keeps them awake.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Use these lines to ask God to keep watch over your grandparents while they sleep. Thank him that his watchfulness never tires, even when their own strength has faded.

Psalm 91:1-2

1 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust.”

(WEB)

Speak this psalm as a prayer of shelter for your grandparents. Ask that they would rest in the protection of the Most High, and that they would find refuge in him each night.

Isaiah 40:29

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.

(WEB)

Bring this verse before God for grandparents who feel weary or worn down. Ask him to give them fresh strength, especially for the mornings that follow long and difficult days.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

End your prayer with this promise of God’s faithfulness. Thank him that his mercies are new every morning, and ask that your grandparents would wake to that mercy tomorrow.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time that fits the rhythm of your evening, such as after the dishes are done, when the lights are dimming, or just before you turn in. Sit somewhere quiet and still your hands in your lap, or hold a photograph of your grandparents, a worn family Bible, or a small object that reminds you of them. Pray slowly and let each sentence settle before moving to the next. You may find it helpful to name each grandparent individually as you come to the middle section.

If you live far away, pray this prayer over a video call or while looking at a recent picture. Invite other family members to pray it at the same hour, so that your grandparents are covered by several people at once. Children in the family can join in by saying the amen together. Over time, the words will become a habit that the whole household carries into the night.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over Israel keep watch over your grandparents tonight. May they lie down in peace and rise in the morning with strength renewed. May they know the nearness of God in every quiet hour, and may their hearts rest in the love that has held them all their days.
