This is an evening prayer for spiritual discipline, meant to be prayed at the close of the day when you are tired and aware of what you did or did not do with your devotional life. It helps you hand the day to God, confess what fell short, and ask for the steady, unhurried faithfulness you cannot produce on your own. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the same spirit.

Evening Prayer for Spiritual Discipline

Lord, the day is ending, and I bring it to you as it is. Some of it went well, and some of it did not. I meant to open your Word this morning and I ran out of time. I started a prayer and let it drift into my phone. I snapped at someone I love when I was worn out, and I went to bed without thanking you for anything at all. Forgive me. Thank you that your mercy does not wait for me to get my habits in order.

Father, I ask you for discipline that is not driven by guilt or by the fear of falling behind. Teach me to return to you the way a child returns to a parent, simply and often. Help me set a time to read, pray and be quiet before you that fits the life I actually live. When the day gets crowded, remind me that a short word with you still counts. Give me patience with my own weakness and steadiness for tomorrow.

Now I release the rest of this day into your hands. Quiet my thoughts, and keep watch over my family, my work and my sleep. Protect me through the night and wake me gently to your mercy in the morning. I rest in you, not in my performance. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired and I know I did not give you my best today. Forgive me, and help me begin again tomorrow with a little more faithfulness. Give me a simple rhythm of prayer and Scripture that I can keep even on hard days. Hold me through the night, and let me rest in your care. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when you feel you have failed again. Thank God that his compassion is renewed each morning, and ask him to let that fresh mercy shape how you begin tomorrow’s time with him.

Psalm 46:10

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.”

(WEB)

At the end of a noisy day, pray this verse slowly. Ask God to quiet the restless part of you that keeps reaching for the next task, and to help you simply know that he is God.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Use this verse as you lie down. Name the worries that tend to keep you awake, then ask God to give you the peace that lets you sleep, trusting him to keep watch while you rest.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Bring your exhaustion to Jesus in prayer, especially the weariness that comes from trying to keep every spiritual habit perfectly. Ask him to take the burden you have been carrying and to teach you a gentler way to walk with him.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Pray this passage as you hand over the day’s anxieties. Give God the things you are carrying, thank him for what has already gone right, and ask him to guard your heart and mind through the night.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a fixed time in the evening, perhaps after the dishes are done and before screens take over, and sit in the same chair or spot each night. Keep a notebook or a sticky note nearby so you can jot down one thing you want to do differently tomorrow. Let your hands do something small while you pray, such as holding a warm cup, folding laundry, or resting your palms open on your lap.

If you live with a spouse, roommate or child, invite them to pray a line of it with you or to bless you before bed. A friend from church could also agree to pray this prayer on the same evening, which keeps you both accountable without making it a contest. Whatever you do, pray it honestly and briefly on hard nights, because God receives a tired prayer as readily as a polished one.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps you through the night remind you that his faithfulness does not depend on your streak of devotion. May he settle your heart, forgive what is behind you, and meet you again with fresh mercy in the morning. Rest well, dear one, in the care of the God who never sleeps.
