This evening prayer is for the close of a day when you are looking ahead to the months still unwritten, the year ahead with its unknown work, health, relationships and decisions. Pray it at bedtime, in the car before going inside, or as the lights go down. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.
Evening Prayer for the Year Ahead
Lord, the day is ending and I bring it to you as it is. Some of it went well, and I am grateful for those small mercies: a conversation that surprised me with warmth, a task finished, a meal shared. Some of it wore me out, and I set those things down now. I am tired of carrying the worries that follow me from morning to night, so I hand over the unfinished work, the words I wish I had said differently, and the people I could not help. Forgive what needs forgiving, and let rest come to my body and my mind.
As I look toward the year ahead, I admit how much I do not know. I do not know what the next season will bring, what doors will open or close, or how my family and friends will fare. Some of my fears are specific: money that feels tight, a health concern I keep turning over, a relationship that needs repair, a decision I cannot yet see clearly. Be with me in each of these. Give me wisdom for the choices in front of me and patience for what I cannot yet change. Keep those I love safe while I sleep, and steady me when morning comes.
Thank you that your care did not begin this evening and will not end with the dawn. Watch over my home tonight. Guard my sleep from anxious thoughts, and let me wake with a little more trust than I went to bed with. I place the year in your hands, one day at a time, and I trust you with what I cannot carry. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, the day is done, and I give you what is left of it. Take the worries I have not finished holding, and the plans for next year that feel too big for me. Guard my rest tonight and keep my loved ones in your care. Help me trust you with tomorrow and the months beyond it, one step at a time. Amen.

How to Pray This Prayer
Choose a fixed time each evening, perhaps after you have washed the last dish or turned off the television, so the prayer becomes part of your rhythm rather than a rare event. Sit somewhere quiet, on the edge of the bed or in a favorite chair, with a lamp on low. Keep a small notebook nearby and jot down the particular concerns you named, so you can return to them over the coming weeks and see how God has been faithful.
If you share a home, pray the prayer aloud with a spouse, a roommate or your children, and let each person add a sentence about what they are carrying. Or ask a friend to pray it with you by phone before bed. Praying for the year ahead together reminds you that you are not the only one holding it.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord keep you through the night and bring you to the morning with a quiet heart. May he steady you for the year ahead, meet you in every decision, and give you rest that the work of tomorrow cannot take away. Go to sleep knowing that you are held.
