These questions help you study Exodus 19 with a small group, a Sunday class, or on your own. Exodus 19 is the chapter where Israel arrives at Mount Sinai, hears God’s covenant offer through Moses, and prepares to meet the Lord in person. The questions below move from what the text says, to what it means, to how it shapes everyday faith.

Exodus 19 at a Glance

Israel reaches the wilderness of Sinai in the third month after leaving Egypt and camps before the mountain. God speaks to Moses, reminds the people of how he rescued them, and invites them into a covenant that makes them his treasured possession, a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. The people agree together to obey.

The rest of the chapter shows the people preparing for the third day. They wash their clothes, keep away from the mountain, and wait while thunder, lightning, smoke and a loud trumpet fill the scene. God calls Moses up the mountain, and then sends him down again to warn the people and the priests not to break through to see the Lord.

Observation Questions

Use these questions first to slow the group down and pin down the facts of the chapter before anyone offers an opinion. Ask someone to read the passage aloud, then answer each question by pointing to the verses. Keep the discussion to what the text states.

Exodus 19:4-6

4 ‘You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings, and brought you to myself. 5 Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice, and keep my covenant, then you shall be my own possession from among all peoples; for all the earth is mine; 6 and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests, and a holy nation.’ These are the words which you shall speak to the children of Israel.”

Read this range early, since it contains God’s covenant offer in full. Hearing the whole promise at once helps the group see how rescue, obedience and identity fit together.

Exodus 19:8

All the people answered together, and said, “All that the LORD has spoken we will do.” Moses reported the words of the people to the LORD.

Read this short verse to hear the people’s answer. Pausing after it gives the group a moment to reflect on what they would say in that position.

Exodus 19:16-19

16 On the third day, when it was morning, there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud on the mountain, and the sound of an exceedingly loud trumpet; and all the people who were in the camp trembled. 17 Moses led the people out of the camp to meet God; and they stood at the lower part of the mountain. 18 All of Mount Sinai smoked, because the LORD descended on it in fire; and its smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain quaked greatly. 19 When the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God answered him by a voice.

This passage paints the scene of God’s coming in vivid detail. Reading it slowly lets the group feel the weight of the moment before discussing its meaning.

Exodus 19:20-22

20 The LORD came down on Mount Sinai, to the top of the mountain. The LORD called Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up. 21 The LORD said to Moses, “Go down, warn the people, lest they break through to the LORD to gaze, and many of them perish. 22 Let the priests also, who come near to the LORD, sanctify themselves, lest the LORD break out on them.”

These verses show God calling Moses up and warning the people. Reading them aloud helps the group see the tension between God’s nearness and his holiness.

Exodus 19:25

So Moses went down to the people, and told them.

End the reading with this brief verse, where Moses goes down to the people and tells them what God said. It is a quiet close that prepares the group for discussion of Moses’s role as mediator.

Memory Verse for Exodus 19

Exodus 19:5

Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice, and keep my covenant, then you shall be my own possession from among all peoples; for all the earth is mine…

This verse holds God’s invitation and condition together in one sentence. Memorizing it helps you remember that God’s treasured people are shaped by listening to his voice and keeping his covenant.

A Closing Prayer for the Group

Father, we come to you as Israel came to Sinai, aware that you are holy and that you have brought us near. Thank you for the ways you have carried us and rescued us, even when we did not deserve it. Help us to listen closely to your voice and to answer you with faithful, willing hearts. Teach us to prepare ourselves for meeting you, to honor your holiness, and to trust your kindness. Make us a people who reflect your goodness to the world around us. Amen.
