Exodus 20:6 says that the LORD shows covenant love, rather than punishment, to a very large number of people who love him and keep his commandments. The verse is a promise of faithfulness set against the warning in the verse before it, and it tells you that God’s loyal kindness reaches far beyond one generation. God spoke these words to Israel at Mount Sinai, as he gave the Ten Commandments to the people he had just rescued from slavery in Egypt.

And showing loving kindness to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.

What Exodus 20:6 Means

The verse begins with the word “showing,” which marks God’s kindness as an ongoing action rather than a single event. The phrase “loving kindness” translates a Hebrew word often rendered as steadfast love or covenant faithfulness. It describes a loyalty that keeps its promises even when the other party fails, and it is one of the most frequent ways the Old Testament describes God’s character.

The “thousands” in the verse does not mean a precise count. It signals that God’s faithfulness spreads out widely, reaching far more people than the ones who are listening at the mountain. The verse is most naturally read as a contrast with verse 5, where God’s justice is said to reach the children of those who turn away from him. The two statements belong together: God holds out consequences for rejection and a lasting, generous kindness for love and obedience.

What the verse does not promise is that loving God will remove every hardship from a person’s life or that the faithful will never suffer. It also does not say that each person is rewarded or punished according to their parents’ choices. It speaks in broad terms about the character of God and the direction of his relationship with the people who respond to him.

The Context of Exodus 20:6

Exodus is the second book of the Torah, traditionally attributed to Moses, and it tells how God brought Israel out of Egypt and formed them into a covenant people. Chapter 20 records the giving of the Ten Commandments at Sinai, which the LORD speaks directly to the whole assembly before Moses receives the written tablets. The audience is the newly freed Israelites, a people who have just learned what it means to be delivered by God’s power.

The verses immediately before verse 6 forbid making idols and bowing down to them, and the verses after it forbid misusing God’s name and call for keeping the Sabbath. Read in that setting, the promise of steadfast love is the reason for these commitments. Israel is asked to be exclusively devoted to a God who has already shown himself faithful, and the kindness described in verse 6 is what that devotion receives in return.

A Short Prayer From Exodus 20:6

Lord, you have shown yourself faithful from the beginning, and your kindness reaches further than I can count. Teach me to love you in a way that shows up in how I keep my word, care for the people in my house, and honor the commitments I have made. Where I have failed to keep your ways, draw me back with the same patient love you have always shown. Let my life be part of the faithful line of those who trust you, and let your steadfast love be the ground I stand on. Amen.
