Exodus 31:5 describes the skills God gave to Bezalel, the craftsman chosen to build the tabernacle, the portable place of worship in the wilderness. The verse lists the trades he was gifted in, including cutting stone for setting and carving wood, so that he could make every kind of artful work the sanctuary required. God speaks this through Moses, who is receiving instructions on Mount Sinai for how Israel should build the place where God would dwell among them.

And in cutting of stones for setting, and in carving of wood, to work in all kinds of workmanship.

What Exodus 31:5 Means

The verse begins with “cutting of stones for setting,” which refers to shaping gemstones and fitting them into settings, most likely for the high priest’s garments and the breastpiece. The second skill, “carving of wood,” covers the detailed woodwork of the ark, the table, and the altar. The closing phrase, “to work in all kinds of workmanship,” widens the list to say that Bezalel’s skill was not limited to a few crafts but reached across the whole range of skilled making.

What the verse does not do is describe a general promise that everyone will receive artistic talent. It is a statement about one specific task God assigned to one specific person for one specific purpose. Its lasting value lies in what it reveals about God: he cares about excellence in craftsmanship and he provides the ability needed to carry out what he has called people to do.

The Context of Exodus 31:5

Exodus is traditionally attributed to Moses and was written for the people of Israel as they journeyed from slavery in Egypt toward the land God had promised them. Chapters 25 through 31 contain the detailed pattern for the tabernacle, and this section comes at the end of that pattern. Verses 2 through 8 introduce Bezalel by name and state that God has filled him with the Spirit of God in wisdom, understanding, and knowledge. Oholiab is appointed to work alongside him.

Reading the verse inside this passage shows that the skills are not presented as personal achievements. They come from God and are directed toward building a dwelling for his presence. The list of crafts is therefore part of a larger picture in which worship, obedience, and skilled labor belong together.

Key Phrases in Exodus 31:5

Colossians 3:23

This verse expands the idea of skilled work into a principle for everyday life. Paul tells believers to work wholeheartedly as serving the Lord rather than merely people, which echoes the way Bezalel’s craftsmanship was dedicated to God’s dwelling place.

Proverbs 22:29

Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will serve kings. He won’t serve obscure men.

Proverbs 22:29 observes that a skilled worker will stand before kings, linking diligence and excellence with honor. It shows the wisdom tradition affirming that God’s people can take real pride in mastering a craft.

A Short Prayer From Exodus 31:5

Lord, thank you that you care about the details of our work as much as the great purposes of our lives. Thank you for the skills you have placed in the hands of your people, whether they are used to shape wood, stone, cloth, or the ordinary tasks of each day. Teach me to bring my abilities to you, to work with honesty and care, and to trust you when I feel I lack what a task requires. Let my hands serve you well, for your glory and for the good of others. Amen.
