Exodus 40:16 means that Moses carried out every instruction the LORD had given him, leaving nothing undone or changed. The verse is a short note of completion: the work God assigned was finished precisely as he specified. It is Moses who speaks here, in the narrator’s voice, describing his own obedience at the close of the long building project for the tabernacle.

Moses did so. According to all that the LORD commanded him, so he did.

What Exodus 40:16 Means

The verse opens with “Moses did so,” a plain statement that the action was taken. The next phrase, “according to all that the LORD commanded him,” ties that action to a specific source. Moses was not improvising a place of worship or adjusting the design to suit his preferences. Every step traced back to God’s own words given earlier in the book.

The closing words, “so he did,” repeat the point for emphasis. The verse does not describe how Moses felt about the work, whether it was easy, or what problems he faced along the way. It simply records faithful completion. What it does not promise is that obedience will always be simple or that every command will make sense in the moment. It shows a pattern: when God gives clear direction, the expected response is careful, full obedience.

The Context of Exodus 40:16

Exodus is traditionally attributed to Moses, and it was written for the people of Israel as they journeyed from slavery in Egypt toward the land God had promised them. Chapters 25 through 31 record God’s detailed instructions for the tabernacle, the portable sanctuary where his presence would dwell among his people. Chapters 35 through 39 describe the people bringing their materials and craftsmen completing the work, and chapter 40 sets up the final assembly.

In the verses just before this one, the LORD tells Moses how to anoint Aaron and his sons for priestly service. Verse 16 sits in the middle of that charge and the setup that follows in verses 17 through 19, where the tabernacle is raised and the covering placed as God had directed. Reading the verse within that sequence shows that Moses’ obedience covered the whole sanctuary and its priesthood, not just one part of the task.

Key Phrases in Exodus 40:16

Exodus 40:34

Then the cloud covered the Tent of Meeting, and the LORD’s glory filled the tabernacle.

(WEB)

This verse follows directly after the completion of the tabernacle and shows what happens once the work is finished according to God’s pattern: his glory fills the sanctuary. It helps readers see the purpose behind Moses’ careful obedience.

Deuteronomy 12:32

Whatever thing I command you, that you shall observe to do. You shall not add to it, nor take away from it.

(WEB)

Moses later gives Israel a general principle that echoes this verse’s concern. The people are told to do all that God commands and to add nothing to it or take anything away, linking faithful completion to the broader covenant life of the nation.

A Short Prayer From Exodus 40:16

Lord, you gave clear direction to Moses, and he carried it out with care from beginning to end. Help me to hear your instructions in my own life and to follow them fully rather than in part. Where I am tempted to change what you have asked or to stop before the work is finished, give me the patience and humility to keep going. Let my obedience be a quiet way of honoring you in everything I do. Amen.
