This page gives you Bible study questions for Genesis 28, with leader notes you can use in a small group, a Sunday class, or your own personal reading. The chapter follows Jacob as he leaves home to find a wife among his mother’s relatives, and it ends with a dream at Bethel that changes how he understands God’s presence. Use the questions in order or pick the ones that fit your time.
Genesis 28 at a Glance
Isaac sends Jacob away from Canaan with a blessing and a command not to marry a Canaanite woman. Esau, noticing that his father disapproves of the local women, goes off and marries a relative of Ishmael. Jacob travels toward Haran, stops for the night, and dreams of a stairway reaching heaven with God standing above it, repeating the promises first given to Abraham.
When Jacob wakes, he names the place Bethel, which means “house of God,” and makes a conditional vow. The chapter moves from family instruction, to rivalry between brothers, to a private encounter with God, and ends with Jacob’s pledge of a tenth. Keep this flow in mind as you read the questions, since each set builds on the one before.
Observation Questions
Use this set first, before anyone offers opinions. Ask the group to point to the verses in the text and resist explaining them until the facts are clear. Short answers are best here, and a good leader will let quiet moments stand.
Genesis 28:3-4
3 May God Almighty bless you, and make you fruitful, and multiply you, that you may be a company of peoples, 4 and give you the blessing of Abraham, to you, and to your offspring with you, that you may inherit the land where you travel, which God gave to Abraham.”
(WEB)
These verses contain Isaac’s blessing on Jacob, which places the family promise in the hands of God Almighty. Reading them early helps the group see that the story is built on a blessing passed from one generation to the next.
Genesis 28:12
He dreamed. Behold, a stairway set upon the earth, and its top reached to heaven. Behold, the angels of God ascending and descending on it.
(WEB)
The stairway dream is the center of the chapter, and reading it aloud lets the group picture the scene. The image of heaven and earth connected by angels sets up the rest of Jacob’s encounter with God.
Genesis 28:13-15
13 Behold, the LORD stood above it, and said, “I am the LORD, the God of Abraham your father, and the God of Isaac. The land whereon you lie, to you will I give it, and to your offspring. 14 Your offspring will be as the dust of the earth, and you will spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south. In you and in your offspring will all the families of the earth be blessed. 15 Behold, I am with you, and will keep you, wherever you go, and will bring you again into this land. For I will not leave you, until I have done that which I have spoken of to you.”
(WEB)
Here the LORD speaks directly to Jacob and repeats the promises of land, descendants, and blessing. Reading this passage reminds the group that God’s words to Jacob are personal and come with a promise of presence.
Genesis 28:16-17
16 Jacob awakened out of his sleep, and he said, “Surely the LORD is in this place, and I didn’t know it.” 17 He was afraid, and said, “How dreadful is this place! This is none other than God’s house, and this is the gate of heaven.”
(WEB)
Jacob’s surprise and awe appear in these lines, and they give the group a chance to hear his own words about the place. Reading them together helps people reflect on how they respond when they realize God is near.
Genesis 28:20-22
20 Jacob vowed a vow, saying, “If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and clothing to put on, 21 so that I come again to my father’s house in peace, and the LORD will be my God, 22 then this stone, which I have set up for a pillar, will be God’s house. Of all that you will give me I will surely give a tenth to you.”
(WEB)
Jacob’s vow closes the chapter and shows his response to God’s promise. Reading it aloud helps the group consider the link between faith, commitment, and generosity in their own lives.
Memory Verse for Genesis 28
Genesis 28:15
Behold, I am with you, and will keep you, wherever you go, and will bring you again into this land. For I will not leave you, until I have done that which I have spoken of to you.”
(WEB)
This verse is a steady reminder that God stays with his people wherever they go and does not leave them until his promises are fulfilled. It is short enough to memorize and useful for anyone facing a change or a long season of waiting.
A Closing Prayer for the Group
Father, we thank you that you meet people in ordinary places, as you met Jacob in the open country with a stone for a pillow. Thank you that you keep your promises across generations and that you stayed with Jacob when he was far from home and unsure of himself. Help us notice your presence in the places we pass through this week, and give us hearts that remember what you have done. Teach us to respond with honest faith and generous living, trusting that you will be with us wherever we go. Be with each person in this room as we leave, and bring us together again in your good time. Amen.
