Genesis 4:22 tells us that Lamech’s wife Zillah gave birth to a son named Tubal Cain, who became the first known craftsman in bronze and iron tools. The verse is a simple family record, but it also shows how human skill and invention appear in the story very early. The narrator, Moses in the traditional view, is describing the line of Cain, the descendants of the first murderer, and the verse is recorded for readers who want to know how civilization developed in the generations after Adam.

Zillah also gave birth to Tubal Cain, the forger of every cutting instrument of brass and iron. Tubal Cain’s sister was Naamah.

What Genesis 4:22 Means

The verse begins with a plain genealogical note: Zillah bore a son. Her son Tubal Cain is then described as a “forger” of “every cutting instrument of brass and iron.” The word forger refers to a smith, someone who heats and shapes metal. Brass in this context most likely means copper alloy, and the verse names the two metals that ancient toolmakers worked with most often. The sentence tells you that metalworking was known and practiced in this early family line.

The verse does not explain whether Tubal Cain’s work was good or bad, nor does it say he was righteous or wicked. It simply reports a skill and a profession. The last line about his sister Naamah adds one more family detail and keeps the focus on the lineage. Genesis 4:22 does not promise anything to the reader. It is a historical record that shows human creativity existing alongside the moral tension of the chapter.

The Context of Genesis 4:22

Genesis is the opening book of the Torah, traditionally attributed to Moses, and it was written for the people of Israel as they remembered where they came from. Chapter 4 follows the story of Cain and Abel and the line that came from Cain. Verses 19 to 22 list the sons of Lamech, who had two wives, and each son is linked to a kind of human activity: herding and tent dwelling, music, and metalwork. Just before this list, Cain’s line is marked by violence and boasting.

Right after the genealogy comes Lamech’s boastful song about killing a man, which shows the moral direction of his family. Reading the verse inside that sequence changes how it sounds. The arts and crafts of Tubal Cain are real progress, but they appear in a family that is also proud and violent. The verse invites you to notice both truths at once.

These verses describe God filling Bezalel with wisdom and skill for crafting in metal and other materials for the tabernacle. They show that skilled making can be used for worship and for the good of God’s people, which gives a fuller picture of the value of craft mentioned in Genesis 4:22.

Genesis 4:26

A son was also born to Seth, and he named him Enosh. At that time men began to call on the LORD’s name.

This verse follows directly after the Cain genealogy and speaks of people beginning to call on the name of the Lord. It reminds you that while the family line of Cain shows human achievement and pride, God’s worship and faithful people continue alongside, which helps you read the chapter with hope.

A Short Prayer From Genesis 4:22

Lord, you made people able to shape metal, build tools, and create things that serve others. Thank you for the skill and the work of human hands. Help me to use what you have given me with humility and care, so that my work honors you and benefits the people around me. Guard my heart from pride and comparison, and keep my eyes on you as the source of every good gift. Amen.
