Hosea 6 teaches children that when we have done wrong, we can turn back to God, and He is kind, faithful and ready to heal and restore us. This lesson suits children aged 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach.

Big Idea

God is kind and faithful, so when we turn back to Him after doing wrong, He will heal us and make us strong again.

Memory Verse

Hosea 6:3

Let us acknowledge the LORD. Let us press on to know the LORD. As surely as the sun rises, the LORD will appear. He will come to us like the rain, like the spring rain that waters the earth.”

(WEB)

Have the children stand tall, then slowly bend forward and rise again as they say the verse together. Each time they rise, they are showing how God lifts us up when we return to Him. Repeat the motion three times until it feels easy.

The Story: Hosea 6 for Kids

Long ago, God’s people, the Israelites, had turned away from Him. They had started worshiping other gods and doing many unkind and wrong things. God had sent His prophet Hosea to remind them of His love and their need to come back home to Him.

In this chapter, the people spoke to one another about returning to the Lord. They said that He had hurt them, but that He would also heal them and bind up their wounds. They believed that He would bring them back to life after a short time, like rising from a long sleep.

God looked at His people with sadness. He said their love was like a morning cloud that disappears quickly, and like dew that dries up early in the day. Their promises did not last, and they did not stay close to Him.

God said, “I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.” He wanted His people to love Him from the heart and to know Him, not just to bring offerings and go through the motions. He was longing for their hearts to be near to Him.

God told the people that when they returned to Him, He would bless them again. He would come to them like the spring rain that waters the ground, bringing new life and growth to everything it touches.

Read It Together

Hosea 6:1

“Come, and let us return to the LORD; for he has torn us to pieces, and he will heal us; he has injured us, and he will bind up our wounds.

Point out the word “Come.” The people are inviting one another to turn back to the Lord. Ask the children what it feels like when someone invites them to come home after a mistake, and how God is always ready to welcome us back.

Hosea 6:6

For I desire mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.

Show the children that God cares most about our hearts. Explain that He wants us to know and love Him, not just do religious activities. Ask them to think of one way they can show love to God in their everyday words and choices.

Hosea 6:4

“Ephraim, what shall I do to you? Judah, what shall I do to you? For your love is like a morning cloud, and like the dew that disappears early.

(WEB)

Help the children notice how God speaks with tender feeling, asking what He should do with His people. Explain that God’s heart is full of love even when His people wander. Ask the children how it feels to know that God still loves us when we make mistakes.

Talk About It

  • What do you think it means to come back to the Lord after we have done something wrong?
  • How did God show that He cared for His people even when they had turned away from Him?
  • What is one thing you can do this week to show God that you love Him with your heart?
  • Why do you think God wants us to know Him instead of just doing things to try to please Him?
  • How does it make you feel to know that God is ready to heal and restore us when we come back to Him?

Activity Ideas

Rain Cloud Drawing

You will need paper, crayons or markers, and cotton balls. Have each child draw a green field or garden on the bottom half of the paper. Then they glue cotton balls to the top for clouds and draw blue raindrops falling down onto the field. Talk about how God’s love comes like rain to refresh us.

Return Home Game

Set two chairs at opposite ends of the room to represent “far from God” and “home with God.” Have the children walk away from home, then listen for your call to come back. When they return, cheer and say “The Lord heals us!” Play several rounds so they practice turning back to God with joy.

Family Heart Reminder

Give each child a paper heart and a pencil. Ask them to write or draw one way they want to love God this week, such as praying each morning or helping at home. Suggest they tape the heart to their bedroom door or the refrigerator as a gentle reminder to come back to God each day.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this chapter shows that God’s love is patient and faithful even when His people are unfaithful to Him. The prophet Hosea reveals God’s deep desire for a living relationship with His people, not empty rituals. The call to return is an invitation rooted in God’s mercy and His power to heal.

Avoid overstating the idea that everything will be easy or immediate for children. Hosea speaks of God’s faithfulness and restoration, but the chapter also shows real consequences for sin. Keep the focus on God’s kindness and our response of returning to Him.

A Prayer to Close

Lord, thank You for loving us even when we wander away from You. Help us come back to You with open hearts, knowing that You heal and restore us. Teach us to love You more each day, not just with our words but with our lives. Thank You for always being ready to welcome us home. Amen.
