This page gives you Bible verses to encourage you in teaching children, whether you are a parent, grandparent, Sunday school volunteer, or classroom teacher. The verses below are arranged by the moments when teaching tends to feel hardest, so you can find the right word for the situation you are facing. Each one is paired with a short reflection and a practical way to carry it into your day.

Verses for the Morning Before a Hard Lesson

Some days you wake up already worried about how the lesson will land, whether the children will listen, or whether you have anything worth saying. These verses speak to that early-morning anxiety and point you back to the One who gives wisdom freely.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

When you feel unsure how to explain a difficult idea to a room of nine-year-olds, this passage invites you to stop relying only on your own cleverness. Before you walk in, pause and ask God to make the path clear, then write one question you want to ask the class to keep your focus on them.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

James promises that God gives wisdom generously to anyone who asks, without scolding them for needing it. Keep a short note in your lesson plan that says simply, “Ask for wisdom,” and pray that prayer while you set out the materials.

Psalm 46:10

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.”

(WEB)

Before a lesson, the noise in your head can be louder than the room itself. This verse calls for stillness, which is a reminder that God is in control of the outcome. Take sixty seconds in your car or at the classroom door to breathe slowly and simply be quiet before you begin.

Verses for When Children Are Not Listening

Every teacher knows the frustration of speaking into restless energy and seeing little response. The passages in this section remind you that faithful teaching does not depend on instant results, and that patience is part of the work itself.

Galatians 6:9

Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up.

(WEB)

Paul writes about not growing weary in doing good, because a harvest comes in its time. When a child seems to ignore everything you say for weeks, remember that seeds often grow out of sight. Write the name of one child on a card and pray for that child by name this week.

1 Corinthians 13:4

Love is patient and is kind; love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud…

(WEB)

Paul describes love as patient and kind, and patience is one of the hardest things to practice with a distracted class. Choose one moment during your next lesson when you will pause before correcting someone, and let the pause be an act of love rather than irritation.

Colossians 3:23

And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men…

(WEB)

This verse reminds you that your work is ultimately offered to the Lord, not only to the children in front of you or to the people who evaluate you. When you feel the effort is wasted, say the words “I am working for the Lord” silently as you prepare the next activity.

Verses for Shaping Character, Not Just Knowledge

Teaching children is about more than facts and skills. These verses speak to the deeper work of forming hearts, teaching kindness, honesty and faith that lasts beyond the school year.

Deuteronomy 6:6-7

6 These words, which I command you today, shall be on your heart; 7 and you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up.

(WEB)

Moses told parents to talk about God’s commands at home, on the road, and when they rise and lie down. Faith is taught in ordinary moments as much as in formal lessons. Tonight, choose one ordinary routine, such as dinner or the drive home, and mention one thing God has done that day.

Proverbs 22:6

Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.

(WEB)

This proverb is often quoted, and it reminds you that early habits and early truths matter. You will not always see the fruit of your teaching right away, but the training you give now lays a foundation. Choose one small habit you want to build in a child this month and be consistent about it.

Ephesians 6:4

You fathers, don’t provoke your children to wrath, but nurture them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

(WEB)

Paul warns fathers not to provoke their children to anger but to bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. Notice both halves of the instruction. Before your next correction, ask yourself whether your tone is training them or simply discouraging them.

Matthew 19:14

But Jesus said, “Allow the little children, and don’t forbid them to come to me; for the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to ones like these.”

(WEB)

Jesus welcomed children and told others not to stop them from coming to him. This should shape how you see every child in your care, as someone Jesus already loves and wants near him. Greet one child by name at the start of your next session and tell them you are glad they came.

Verses for Teachers Who Feel They Are Not Enough

Many teachers quietly wonder whether they have the training, energy or faith to do this work well. These passages remind you that your strength comes from God, and that he delights to use ordinary people for his purposes.

2 Corinthians 12:9

He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me.

(WEB)

When Paul asked for relief from weakness, God told him that his grace was sufficient. That sentence applies directly to a teacher running on empty. Admit one specific weakness to God today, such as impatience or a lack of preparation, and ask for grace in that exact area.

Philippians 4:13

I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.

(WEB)

Paul wrote this from prison, showing that strength in Christ is not tied to comfortable circumstances. It is a verse about what God enables you to do, not a promise that every class will go smoothly. Write it on a sticky note and place it where you keep your lesson plans.

Isaiah 40:29

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.

(WEB)

Isaiah says God gives strength to the weary and increases power to those who have none. Teaching can drain you quickly, so this verse invites you to draw on God’s strength rather than your own reserves. At the end of a long day, pray for renewed energy before you start on the next task.

How to Use These Verses

Write the verses that speak most directly to your situation on index cards or in the front of your lesson planner. Keep them where you will see them during the week, such as on the refrigerator at home or on the inside cover of your classroom binder. Reading one verse each morning, before the children arrive or before the household wakes, gives you a steady word to return to.

You may also find it helpful to read a verse aloud with a child or with a co-teacher. Ask what it means to them, and let their answer shape your conversation. Many of the best moments in teaching come when the verses you chose for yourself end up speaking to the children as well.

A Short Prayer for teaching children

Lord, you are the one who gives wisdom to those who ask, and you know each child in this room by name. Thank you for trusting me with their hearts and minds, even when I feel inadequate. Give me patience when the class is restless, kindness when I am tired, and clear words when I am unsure what to say. Let my teaching point them toward you, and let whatever I cannot do be done by your grace. Amen.
