This list gives you Bible verses to read on Memorial Day, whether you are honoring a service member you lost, sitting with grief at a family grave, or simply wanting words that hold gratitude and hope together. The verses below were chosen for a day that asks us to remember the cost of others’ sacrifice while keeping our eyes on a God who remembers us. Each one speaks to loss, faithfulness, courage, or the promise that death does not have the last word.

Verses for Remembering Those Who Gave Their Lives

Memorial Day is about people who did not come home. These verses speak to the weight of that absence and to the love that does not fade with time. Read them slowly, perhaps at the place where you remember someone by name.

John 15:13

Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.

(WEB)

Jesus describes love in terms of laying down one’s life for friends, and that is exactly the kind of love many of the fallen showed. Let this verse guide a short moment of gratitude today: name one specific person you are thankful for and say their name out loud.

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

The psalmist promises that the Lord is near to the brokenhearted, and grief over a lost loved one is a form of that brokenness. If the day stirs up sorrow you did not expect, let this verse be a reminder that you do not have to hide it. Bring the sadness to God as you would bring it to a trusted friend.

Revelation 21:4

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; neither will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain, any more. The first things have passed away.”

(WEB)

This passage looks ahead to a time when death, mourning, and pain are no more. It does not erase the loss you feel, but it points to a future where every tear is wiped away. Consider writing this verse on a card and placing it near a photograph of someone you miss.

Verses on Courage, Duty, and Faithfulness

Many who served showed courage in the face of danger and loyalty to something larger than themselves. These verses speak to that steadiness and to the call to be faithful in hard places, whether on a battlefield or at a kitchen sink.

Joshua 1:9

Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

(WEB)

God commanded Joshua to be strong and courageous because the Lord would go with him. Service members often carried fear and kept moving anyway. Before you start your day, speak this verse aloud as a small act of courage in your own ordinary challenges.

1 Corinthians 15:58

Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the Lord’s work, because you know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.

(WEB)

Paul urges believers to stand firm and keep giving themselves fully to the Lord’s work, knowing their labor is not wasted. That is a word for anyone whose faithfulness goes unseen. Ask yourself today where you can keep steady in a quiet, unnoticed duty.

Ephesians 6:13

Therefore put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and, having done all, to stand.

(WEB)

Paul describes the armor of God and tells believers to stand firm when the day of trouble comes. The image of standing ground under pressure resonates with many who served. Choose one part of your daily life where you need to stand firm, and pray for strength there.

Verses of Comfort for Families and Loved Ones

Memorial Day often brings back memories of the people who once sat at the table with us. These verses speak to families, spouses, children, and friends who carry that memory forward and who need comfort in the ache of missing someone.

Psalm 147:3

He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.

(WEB)

The psalm says God heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. Grief can feel like a wound that never closes, and this verse offers the hope that God tends to those wounds over time. If you are a family member, you might ask God for healing in one specific memory today.

Matthew 5:4

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

(WEB)

Jesus says those who mourn will be comforted, which is a blessing rather than a rebuke. Mourning is treated as something honest and holy, not something to hurry past. Let this verse give you permission to grieve fully today.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

God tells the people of Israel not to fear, because he is with them and will strengthen them. Families of the fallen often face months of quiet loneliness after the ceremonies end. Keep this verse close for the ordinary evenings when the house feels too quiet.

Verses on Hope and the Life to Come

Memorial Day looks back, but Christian hope looks forward. These verses point to resurrection and to the reunion that God promises to those who trust him, offering a steady hope to hold alongside the grief.

1 Thessalonians 4:13-14

13 But we don’t want you to be ignorant, brothers, concerning those who have fallen asleep, so that you don’t grieve like the rest, who have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul writes so that believers would not grieve like people without hope, because Jesus died and rose again. The apostle does not forbid sorrow but reframes it around the resurrection. Read this passage slowly and let the hope in it sit beside the loss you carry.

Romans 8:38-39

38 For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from God’s love, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(WEB)

Paul lists death, life, and every created thing and says none of them can separate us from God’s love. This is a strong word for those who fear that loss has cut them off from anything good. Repeat the closing phrase slowly as you walk outside today.

John 11:25-26

25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies. 26 Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

(WEB)

Jesus tells Martha that he is the resurrection and the life, and whoever believes in him will live even after dying. He spoke these words at a grave, which makes them especially fitting for this day. Consider reading them at a cemetery or beside a memorial.

How to Use These Verses

You do not need a special setting to use these verses well. Write two or three of them on index cards and keep them in a wallet, a car visor, or a kitchen drawer. On Memorial Day morning, read one aloud before you leave the house, and let it set the tone for the hours ahead.

Many people find it helpful to pray a verse back to God rather than simply reading it. Take Psalm 34:18 or Romans 8:38-39 and turn each line into a sentence of prayer. If you are visiting a grave or memorial, read a passage there, pause for silence, and then speak the name of the person you are remembering.

A Short Prayer for Memorial Day

Lord, on this day we remember those who gave their lives and the families who still feel their absence. We thank you for their courage, their service, and the love that moved them to answer a hard call. Be near to those who are grieving today, and bind up the wounds that time has not yet healed. Hold them in your steady care when the ceremonies end and the house goes quiet again. Keep us grateful, honest, and hopeful, looking toward the day when every tear is wiped away. Amen.
