If you have reached the point of wanting to give up, this list gives you Scripture to hold onto when your strength is gone and the next step looks impossible. It is written for the tired parent, the struggling student, the person weighed down by a failing business, a broken relationship, or a long illness. The verses below share one thread: God meets people in their exhaustion, does not measure them by how much they can still carry, and promises to remain with them when they feel they cannot go on.

Verses for the Morning You Cannot Face the Day

Some mornings the first thought is that you simply cannot do it again. These verses speak to that heaviness before the day has fully started, reminding you that your strength is not the only source available to you.

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Isaiah describes people who have run out of energy and yet are lifted up by the Lord. Before you get out of bed, take one slow breath and ask God for renewed strength for just the first task. Then take that task, and nothing more.

Psalm 46:1

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

(WEB)

This verse calls God a refuge and a very present help, not a distant idea. Write the word “refuge” on a sticky note and place it where you will see it while you brush your teeth or make coffee.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

The writer of Lamentations was in the ruins of his city, yet he found hope in God’s steady mercy that starts fresh each day. Remind yourself that yesterday’s failures do not cancel today’s mercy, and let that be the only promise you carry out the door.

Verses for the Hard Hours When Everything Feels Unfinished

Discouragement often arrives in the middle of the day, when the work is still piling up and the finish line is nowhere in sight. These verses address that long stretch of effort that seems to bring no visible reward.

Galatians 6:9

Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up.

(WEB)

Paul writes about the danger of growing tired in doing good, and the promise of a harvest in its time. When you feel like quitting a task, ask whether you are simply weary or truly called to stop, and pray for wisdom to tell the difference.

2 Corinthians 4:16-17

16 Therefore we don’t faint, but though our outward man is decaying, yet our inward man is renewed day by day. 17 For our light affliction, which is for the moment, works for us more and more exceedingly an eternal weight of glory…

(WEB)

Paul admits that his body was wasting away, yet he refused to lose heart because his inner life was being renewed. Name one small way your inner life is being strengthened this week, such as a few minutes of prayer or a conversation with a friend who prays for you.

Romans 8:28

We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose.

(WEB)

This verse does not say every hard thing is good, but that God works through all things for the good of those who love him. Write down one difficulty you are facing and ask God to show you what he might be doing in it, even if you cannot see it yet.

Hebrews 12:1

Therefore let us also, seeing we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us…

(WEB)

The writer pictures a race with a crowd of witnesses cheering from the stands. Choose one person who has modeled faithfulness for you and recall a specific way they persevered, then let that memory pace your next few steps.

Verses for the Night When Quitting Seems Easier

Late at night, fear and fatigue can make giving up look like the only peaceful option. These verses speak to those dark hours, when the mind is quiet enough to hear how close God remains.

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

The psalmist says the Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those crushed in spirit. If tears come tonight, let them be part of your prayer rather than something to hide from God.

Psalm 73:26

My flesh and my heart fails, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

(WEB)

Asaph admits that his flesh and heart may fail, yet God is the strength of his heart. Before sleep, say the word “strength” aloud and admit to God exactly where your own reserves have run dry.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Jesus invites the weary and burdened to come to him and find rest. Tonight, put down one specific worry you have been carrying and imagine handing it to him before you turn off the light.

Deuteronomy 31:6

Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or scared of them; for the LORD your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you.”

(WEB)

Moses tells Israel to be strong and courageous because the Lord goes with them and will never leave them. Sleep is one of the few times you cannot control your circumstances, so let this promise be enough for the night.

Philippians 4:13

I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.

(WEB)

Paul writes that he can do all things through Christ who strengthens him, and he wrote it from prison. Use this verse as a reminder that the strength you need comes from God, not from pretending you have plenty of your own.

How to Use These Verses

Write two or three of these verses on index cards and keep them in your wallet, on your phone’s lock screen, or taped inside a kitchen cabinet. When the urge to give up arrives, reading a single card takes seconds and interrupts the spiral of discouragement before it gains momentum.

Pray the verse back to God in your own words rather than just reading it silently. For example, if you read Psalm 46:1, you might say, “Lord, I am not able to carry this, so be my refuge right now.” Speaking the Scripture aloud turns it into a conversation, and that conversation often steadies you more than the words on the page alone.

A Short Prayer for When You Want to Give Up

Father, I am tired, and some part of me wants to stop trying altogether. You know the weight I am carrying, the things I cannot fix, and the fear that I will fail the people who depend on me. Meet me where I am and give me strength for the next hour, not the whole season. Remind me that your mercy is new every morning and that you do not grow weary as I do. Help me take the next faithful step, and then the one after that. Amen.
