This lesson teaches children that God wants us to love Him and do what is right, not just go through the motions. It is built for ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes. You can use it in a Sunday school room, a family devotion, or a small group at home.
Big Idea
God wants our hearts, not just our empty actions. He invites us to come to Him, to stop doing wrong, and to do good things for people who need help.
Memory Verse
Isaiah 1:17
Learn to do well. Seek justice. Relieve the oppressed. Judge the fatherless. Plead for the widow.”
(WEB)
Have the children stand up and make a “do good” motion. Teach them to raise one hand high, then bring it down and place it on their heart, saying “learn to do well” as they move. Repeat this three times together until they can say the verse and move at the same time.
The Story: Isaiah 1 for Kids
A prophet named Isaiah lived long ago in the land of Judah, in the city of Jerusalem. God gave Isaiah a special message to share with His people. Isaiah was not sharing his own ideas. He was speaking what God told him to say.
God called the people His children. He had taken care of them and raised them up. But the people had turned away from Him. They had forgotten Him, and they were doing many wrong things. An ox knows the one who feeds it, but God’s people did not even understand who was caring for them.
The people were bringing many gifts to the temple, and they were lifting up many prayers. God said, “I have had enough of your sacrifices. Your hands are full of wrong, and I will not listen.” God did not want the gifts without the love. He wanted the people to stop doing evil and to start doing good.
God gave them a simple way to change. He said, “Wash yourselves and make yourselves clean. Learn to do well. Seek justice. Help the people who are hurt, care for the children who have no parents, and speak up for the women who have no husband to protect them.” God told them to take real action.
God also said something that gave them hope. “Come now, and let us reason together. Though your sins are like red as crimson, they shall be as white as snow.” God wanted to make them clean and forgive them when they turned back to Him. He always wanted His people to come home to Him.
The chapter ends with a warning and a promise. God’s people would have to face the results of their choices, but God would still make a way for them to return. He would make the city faithful and right again.
Read It Together
Isaiah 1:2-3
2 Hear, heavens, and listen, earth; for the LORD has spoken: “I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me. 3 The ox knows his owner, and the donkey his master’s crib; but Israel doesn’t know, my people don’t consider.”
(WEB)
Point out that God is calling the heavens and the earth to listen to Him. Ask the children to notice how God compares His people to an ox and a donkey who know their owners. Explain that God wants us to know and remember Him the way animals know the people who care for them.
Isaiah 1:16-17
16 Wash yourselves, make yourself clean. Put away the evil of your doings from before my eyes. Cease to do evil. 17 Learn to do well. Seek justice. Relieve the oppressed. Judge the fatherless. Plead for the widow.”
(WEB)
Show the children the list of actions God gives: wash, make clean, stop doing wrong, learn to do good, seek justice, and help others. Explain that God cares about how we treat people, not only about what we say when we pray.
Isaiah 1:18
“Come now, and let us reason together,” says the LORD: “Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow. Though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.
(WEB)
Point out that God invites His people to come and talk with Him. Explain that even when we have done wrong, God offers to make us clean. Let the children see that God’s forgiveness is bright and complete, like snow.
Talk About It
- What is something good you can do this week to help someone who needs it?
- How do you think God feels when we say we love Him but then act unkindly to others?
- Why do you think God wants our hearts more than fancy gifts or big church events?
- What does it mean to you that God says our sins can be washed clean like snow?
- Who is someone you can speak up for or care for, like the widow or the child who has no one?
Activity Ideas
Snow-White Heart Drawing
You will need white paper, red and white crayons or markers, and scissors. Have each child draw a large heart in red on the paper, then cut it out. Next, have them draw small white snowflakes over the heart with white crayon. Explain that God makes our hearts clean like snow when we come to Him.
Do Good, Stop Wrong Movement Game
You will need an open space and a bell, whistle, or clapping rhythm. Call out a “do good” action, such as helping a friend, picking up trash, or sharing a toy, and have the children act it out in place. When you ring the bell, they freeze, and you call out a “stop wrong” action, such as hitting or lying, and they shake their heads and step backward. Play a few rounds to reinforce the difference.
Take-Home Kindness Chart
You will need a sheet of paper, markers, and stickers. Draw a simple chart with the days of the week across the top and a space for each child to write one kind act they completed each day. Ask families to help the child fill it in and talk about it at dinner. Encourage them to bring the chart back to class to share one act of kindness they remember.
Teacher Notes
For adults, Isaiah 1 shows that God is not satisfied with religious rituals that have no change of heart behind them. He calls His people to real repentance, which means turning away from wrong and toward justice, mercy, and care for the vulnerable. The chapter also shows God’s persistent love, inviting His people to reason with Him and promising forgiveness when they return.
When teaching children, avoid overstating the idea that God rejects all worship or that He is angry with children personally. The passage speaks primarily to a nation that had turned away from God’s ways. Keep the focus on God’s invitation to come home and His desire for clean hearts and right actions.
A Prayer to Close
Dear God, thank You for loving us and wanting our hearts. Help us to stop doing wrong and to learn to do good. Show us how to care for people who need help, and wash us clean when we make mistakes. Thank You for always inviting us back to You. Amen.
