Isaiah 12 is a short song of thanksgiving, six verses long, that Isaiah places in the mouth of a redeemed people looking back on God’s anger turning to comfort. These Isaiah 12 Bible study questions are built for a small group, a Sunday class, or a personal study in one sitting. Each section gives a leader what they need to guide the conversation without preparing a separate summary.
Isaiah 12 at a Glance
The chapter opens with a future day when the people will say they are thankful, even though God had been angry with them. Verses 2 and 3 move from that confession into trust, using the language of salvation and the image of drawing water from wells. Verses 4 through 6 then widen the circle, calling the people to make God’s name known among the nations and to shout with joy because the Holy One of Israel is among them in Zion.
The rhythm is simple: confession, trust, then public praise. A group can follow that same movement when reading the chapter aloud, pausing after each shift to notice what changed in the speaker’s heart.
Observation Questions
Use this set first, before anyone offers an interpretation. Ask the group to point to the words on the page, and resist the urge to explain. Short answers that stay close to the text will make the later questions much richer.
Isaiah 12:1-2
1 In that day you will say, “I will give thanks to you, the LORD; for though you were angry with me, your anger has turned away and you comfort me. 2 Behold, God is my salvation. I will trust, and will not be afraid; for Yah, the LORD, is my strength and song; and he has become my salvation.”

Reading these verses first sets the confession and trust of the whole chapter. Ask the group to read aloud slowly so everyone hears the shift from anger to comfort, and from fear to trust.
Isaiah 12:3
Therefore with joy you will draw water out of the wells of salvation.
(WEB)
The image of drawing water is short and vivid, so one reading is enough to plant it. Pause afterward and let the group share what comes to mind when they hear the word “wells.”
Isaiah 12:4-5
4 In that day you will say, “Give thanks to the LORD! Call on his name. Declare his doings among the peoples. Proclaim that his name is exalted! 5 Sing to the LORD, for he has done excellent things! Let this be known in all the earth!

These lines move the song outward with a series of commands. Reading them aloud helps the group feel the momentum of the calls to give thanks, call, declare, and sing.
Isaiah 12:6
Cry aloud and shout, you inhabitant of Zion; for the Holy One of Israel is great among you!”
(WEB)
This final verse brings the chapter to a close with a shout. Reading it with energy gives the group a sense of how the song is meant to be sung, not merely studied.
Isaiah 12:2
Behold, God is my salvation. I will trust, and will not be afraid; for Yah, the LORD, is my strength and song; and he has become my salvation.”
(WEB)
Repeating this central verse at the end of the reading helps the group carry its claim that God is their salvation and strength. A second reading often brings out words that were missed the first time.

A Closing Prayer for the Group
Father, we thank you that your anger has turned away and that you now comfort your people. Teach us to trust you without fear, and to draw joy from the wells of your salvation each day. Give us words to declare your doings to those around us, and hearts that sing when we remember who you are. Be great among us here, as you are great among your people in Zion. Amen.
