Isaiah 19 is a prophecy against Egypt that moves from judgment to an unexpected promise of healing and blessing for the nations. The questions below work for a small group, a Sunday class, or personal study, and each one points you back to specific verses so the discussion stays anchored in the text.

Isaiah 19 at a Glance

The chapter opens with the LORD coming in judgment against Egypt, bringing confusion among its people, failure of its counsel, and drought that ruins the Nile and the work that depends on it. The prophet then turns to the failure of Egypt’s wise men and leaders, who are unable to advise Pharaoh well.

The tone shifts in the closing verses. Egypt and Assyria are named together with Israel, and the three are described as a blessing within the earth. A leader can use the questions in order, moving from what the text says, to what it means, to how it should shape daily faithfulness.

Observation Questions

Use these questions first to slow the group down and stick to what the passage actually reports. Ask people to point to the words in their own Bibles before anyone offers an interpretation.

Isaiah 19:1

The burden of Egypt. “Behold, the LORD rides on a swift cloud, and comes to Egypt. The idols of Egypt will tremble at his presence; and the heart of Egypt will melt within it.

(WEB)

Read this first to set the tone of the chapter. It shows the LORD coming in judgment with a swiftness that the nations cannot resist, and it names Egypt directly as the object of the burden.

Isaiah 19:4

I will give over the Egyptians into the hand of a cruel lord. A fierce king will rule over them,” says the Lord, the LORD of Armies.

(WEB)

This verse makes the judgment concrete by naming the cruel lord and fierce king. Reading it aloud helps the group feel the weight of what the prophet is announcing.

Isaiah 19:13

The princes of Zoan have become fools. The princes of Memphis are deceived. They have caused Egypt to go astray, who are the cornerstone of her tribes.

(WEB)

Reading this verse slowly exposes the failure of the wise men. It gives the group a clear picture of how confident human counsel can go astray.

Isaiah 19:22

The LORD will strike Egypt, striking and healing. They will return to the LORD, and he will be entreated by them, and will heal them.

(WEB)

This verse carries the turning point of the chapter, where striking gives way to healing. Read it aloud to highlight the hope that runs beneath the judgment.

Isaiah 19:25

Because the LORD of Armies has blessed them, saying, “Blessed be Egypt my people, Assyria the work of my hands, and Israel my inheritance.”

(WEB)

The closing blessing names three nations with three different relationships to the LORD. Reading it last leaves the group with the wide reach of God’s purposes.

Memory Verse for Isaiah 19

A Closing Prayer for the Group

Father, we come before you as people who often trust our own wisdom and our own strength. Thank you that you govern the nations and that nothing escapes your hand. Show us where we have leaned on counsel that cannot save, and turn our hearts toward you in humility. Help us to pray for those we find hard to love, trusting that your purposes reach farther than we can see. Heal what is broken in us and in our community, and make us a people who bless others as you have blessed us. Amen.
