This lesson teaches children that God is strong, fair, and good, and that He keeps His people safe even when the world feels scary. It works for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach, including a story, a memory verse, and a short activity.

Big Idea

God is our king, and He takes care of the people who trust Him, even when trouble comes. We can wait for Him every morning and know He will help us.

Memory Verse

Isaiah 33:22

For the LORD is our judge. The LORD is our lawgiver. The LORD is our king. He will save us.

(WEB)

Hold both hands out in front of you, palms up, as if you are receiving a gift. Then lift your hands high over your head and say the words slowly with the class. Doing the motion each time helps children remember that the Lord is their king, judge, and helper.

The Story: Isaiah 33 for Kids

A long time ago, God spoke through a prophet named Isaiah to the people of Judah. Some people in the land were being mean and unfair. They hurt others and broke promises, and they thought they could get away with it. God told them that a time would come when those who harmed others would themselves be stopped.

The people of Judah were scared. Nations around them were strong and loud, and the people felt small. So they prayed and said, “Lord, be kind to us. We have waited for you. Be our strength every morning.” They needed God to help them every single day, not just once.

God answered them. He said, “Now I will arise. Now I will lift myself up and be honored.” God showed that He lives high above everything and that He had filled the city of Zion with fairness and goodness. Those who lived in fear of His power were the ones who trembled, while the honest people had nothing to fear from Him.

God explained what kind of person can live close to Him. A person who walks in what is right, speaks the truth, refuses to take bribes, and does not join in with evil will find a safe place. God said that such a person will have a strong fortress like a rock, and their bread and water will always be provided.

Then God gave the people a happy picture of the future. They would see their king in His beauty, and they would no longer be afraid of the fierce, confusing people who had frightened them. The city of Jerusalem would be a quiet home where nobody would have to be afraid again. God Himself would be there with them, like a wide river that brings life.

Read It Together

Isaiah 33:2

The LORD, be gracious to us. We have waited for you. Be our strength every morning, our salvation also in the time of trouble.

(WEB)

Point out the words “Be our strength every morning.” Ask children to notice that the people asked God for help every day, and tell them that God is ready to help us each morning too.

Isaiah 33:6

There will be stability in your times, abundance of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge. The fear of the LORD is your treasure.

(WEB)

Show children the word “treasure” and explain that the fear of the Lord is described as something very precious. Talk about how respecting God, and knowing He is good, is worth more than anything we could own.

Isaiah 33:15-16

15 He who walks righteously, and speaks blamelessly; He who despises the gain of oppressions, who gestures with his hands, refusing to take a bribe, who stops his ears from hearing of blood, and shuts his eyes from looking at evil— 16 he will dwell on high. His place of defense will be the fortress of rocks. His bread will be supplied. His waters will be sure.

(WEB)

Point out the everyday actions listed here, like walking in what is right and speaking the truth. Help children see that God cares about how we treat others, and that a life of honesty and kindness is a safe place to live.

Talk About It

  • What did the people in Judah do when they felt scared, and what can you do when you feel scared?
  • Why do you think God wants us to wait for Him every morning instead of only asking once?
  • What are some ways a person can walk in what is right during a normal school day?
  • How does it feel to know God is our king and our judge, and that He cares about what is fair?
  • What is one thing God has done for you that you can thank Him for today?

Activity Ideas

Crown and Castle Craft

You will need paper, crayons, scissors, tape, and a few cups or small boxes. Have each child draw a crown on paper, color it, and cut it out. Then let them build a small paper castle or fortress out of the cups or boxes. As they work, remind them that God is their king and their safe place, like a strong rock.

Good Morning Hands Game

Gather the children in a circle and teach them the memory verse motion, with hands open and lifted high. Call out “Morning!” and have everyone wave their hands slowly, then call out “King!” and have everyone stand tall with arms raised. Play a few rounds, then ask the children to say the verse together while they move.

Take-Home Promise Card

You will need index cards, a pencil, and a marker. Write the words “God is our king and helper” on each card and give one to every child. Ask them to draw a small morning sun on the back, then place the card somewhere they will see it when they wake up. Encourage them to read it each morning and pray a simple thank you.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this chapter shows a God who is both powerful and just. He opposes injustice and violence, yet He also promises to protect and provide for the people who trust Him and live honestly. The chapter moves from judgment on the proud to a hopeful picture of a secure future in God’s presence, which reminds us that God’s care is steady and His character does not change.

When teaching children, avoid overstating the idea that obeying God means nothing bad will ever happen to them. The chapter speaks of God’s strength and faithfulness, not a promise that every hard situation will disappear. Focus on God being with us and caring for us, rather than suggesting that good behavior guarantees a trouble-free life.

A Prayer to Close

Lord, thank You that You are our king and our helper. We wait for You every morning, and we trust You to keep us safe. Help us walk in what is right and speak the truth, just like You want. Thank You for always being with us. Amen.
