This lesson teaches children that God is faithful and keeps every promise he makes, even when the world seems to be falling apart. It is designed for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach. Keep the tone calm and steady, because parts of this chapter describe a serious judgment.
Big Idea
God always does what he says. Nothing he has promised will ever be lost or forgotten, and his people are safe in his care.
Memory Verse
Isaiah 34:16
Search in the book of the LORD, and read: not one of these will be missing. None will lack her mate. For my mouth has commanded, and his Spirit has gathered them.

Teach the children to open a book with both hands, then slowly run one finger down the page as if checking a list. Say “Not one is missing” each time the finger reaches the bottom, so the words and the motion stay together.
The Story: Isaiah 34 for Kids
A long time ago, the prophet Isaiah stood up and called all the nations of the earth to come close and listen. He wanted everyone to hear what God had decided. God was very upset with the nations that had turned against him and hurt his people. Isaiah told them that God would bring judgment on those who had done wrong.
Isaiah spoke especially about Edom, a neighbor nation. The land there would become empty and quiet, filled with wild animals and birds instead of busy towns. Isaiah said that the land would be like a place of ashes that would not stop smoking for a very long time. It was a sad picture, and it showed how serious it is to turn away from God.
Then Isaiah told something amazing about the birds. He said, “Search in the book of the LORD, and read.” God had written down his plans, and every single creature he had gathered would have its own home and its own mate. Not one of them would be left out. God had planned it all carefully, like a builder with a measuring line.
The lesson for the people was clear. Even when the world looked frightening and empty, God was still in control. What God said would happen, and what he promised to his people would stand strong for every generation to come.
Read It Together
Isaiah 34:1-2
1 Come near, you nations, to hear! Listen, you peoples. Let the earth and all it contains hear; the world, and everything that comes from it. 2 For the LORD is enraged against all the nations, and angry with all their armies. He has utterly destroyed them. He has given them over for slaughter.

Point out that God calls everyone to listen, not only some people. Explain that God is serious about wrong, but he speaks clearly so that people can understand and turn back to him.
Isaiah 34:8
For the LORD has a day of vengeance, a year of recompense for the cause of Zion.
(WEB)
Explain that the word “vengeance” means God makes things right in the end. Children can understand that God is fair and will one day set everything right, including protecting his people.
Isaiah 34:17
He has cast the lot for them, and his hand has divided it to them with a measuring line. They shall possess it forever. From generation to generation they will dwell in it.
(WEB)
Show the children that God chose a place for every creature and gave them a home. Remind them that God also has a good place planned for each of his children.
Talk About It
- What did God want all the nations to do when Isaiah spoke to them?
- Why do you think God cares about how people treat each other?
- What is one thing God promised in the Bible that you know he kept?
- How did God take care of the birds and animals in this chapter?
- When something scary happens, how can knowing God keeps his word help you feel safe?
Activity Ideas
Measuring Line Drawing
You will need paper, a pencil, a ruler or string, and crayons. Ask each child to draw a simple picture of a bird, an owl, or a snake, then glue it to a page. Use the ruler to draw a straight line under the picture to show how God measured out a home for each creature. Let the children name what their creature needs to be happy.
Searching the Book Game
You will need a Bible and a few small paper cards with animal names on them. Hide the cards around the room. Let the children search for them, and when they find one, they read the matching verse aloud with your help. Tell them that God’s word helps us find what we need, just like they found the cards.
Promise Keeper Take-Home Card
You will need index cards, markers, and a pen. Have each child write or draw one promise God has made, such as “God is with me.” Help them decorate the card and punch a hole in one corner. Tie a short string through it so they can hang it on a bedpost or backpack, and remind them to read it each day.
Teacher Notes
For adults, this chapter shows that God is holy and that he judges sin and injustice. It also shows that his word is trustworthy, and that every promise he gives will be fulfilled. Read the chapter as part of God’s larger story of justice and faithfulness to his people, and speak about it with reverence.
Avoid overstating the details of the judgment to children. The imagery of blood, fat, and burning pitch is vivid and can frighten young listeners. Focus on the simple truths that God keeps his word and cares for what he has made, and let the harder parts be explained gently and briefly.
A Prayer to Close
Heavenly Father, thank you that you always keep your word. When the world feels scary or unsure, help us remember that you are in control. Thank you for caring for every creature and for planning a safe home for each of your children. Help us trust you every day. Amen.
