This page gives you a full set of Bible study questions for Isaiah 4, with a leader’s note under each one. It works for a small group, a Sunday class, or personal study. The chapter is short, only six verses, but it moves from a strange picture of seven women seeking one man to a promise of cleansing and a cloud of protection over Mount Zion.

Isaiah 4 at a Glance

The chapter opens in a time of devastation, when the population has been reduced and women are asking for the shame of being unmarried to be removed. Its tone then shifts toward hope. The LORD’s branch will become beautiful and glorious, and the survivors who remain in Jerusalem will be called holy.

The closing verses describe God’s presence over Zion as a cloud by day and fire by night, with a canopy and shelter that guard the city from heat, storm and rain. Read together, the chapter moves from human loss to divine cleansing and protection.

Observation Questions

Use these questions first, before anyone offers an interpretation. The goal is to get the group reading closely and noticing details in the text itself. Let people answer from the passage before you add any commentary.

Isaiah 4:1

Seven women shall take hold of one man in that day, saying, “We will eat our own bread, and wear our own clothing: only let us be called by your name. Take away our reproach.”

(WEB)

Read this verse first so the group hears the women’s plea in their own voices. It sets the tone of loss and need that the rest of the chapter answers with hope and protection.

Isaiah 4:2

In that day, the LORD’s branch will be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the land will be the beauty and glory of the survivors of Israel.

(WEB)

This verse turns the mood toward restoration. Reading it aloud helps the group hear the shift from devastation to beauty and glory in the land and its people.

Isaiah 4:3-4

3 It will happen, that he who is left in Zion, and he who remains in Jerusalem, shall be called holy, even everyone who is written among the living in Jerusalem; 4 when the Lord shall have washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion, and shall have purged the blood of Jerusalem from within it, by the spirit of justice, and by the spirit of burning.

(WEB)

These verses name the holiness that follows cleansing. Reading them together lets the group feel the connection between God’s washing and the name that is given afterward.

Isaiah 4:5

The LORD will create over the whole habitation of Mount Zion, and over her assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day, and the shining of a flaming fire by night; for over all the glory will be a canopy.

(WEB)

The cloud, smoke, and fire describe God’s presence over Zion in vivid language. Hearing it aloud helps the group picture the covering the chapter promises.

Isaiah 4:6

There will be a pavilion for a shade in the daytime from the heat, and for a refuge and for a shelter from storm and from rain.

(WEB)

This final verse finishes the picture of shelter from heat, storm and rain. Ending the reading here gives the group a sense of God’s protection as the last word of the chapter.

Memory Verse for Isaiah 4

A Closing Prayer for the Group

Father, we come to you as a group that has read about shame, cleansing, and shelter. Some of us carry needs we have not named aloud, and we ask you to see them clearly. Wash away what does not belong to us, and make us people whose lives reflect your holiness and beauty. Thank you that your presence covers the places we fear most. Teach us to rest under your canopy this week, and keep us steady in your care for each other. Amen.
