This lesson teaches children that God gives wisdom to everyone who asks, and that we should be doers of God’s word, not only hearers. It works well for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

Big Idea

When we don’t know what to do, we can ask God for help, and we can show that we love him by doing what he says.

Memory Verse

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

Have children cup their hands together in front of their chest, then lift them up toward the ceiling like they are asking for a gift. Say the verse together as you lift your hands, and repeat it three times.

The Story: James 1 for Kids

James was a servant of God and a leader among the believers. He wrote a letter to Christian friends who had scattered far from home because of hard times. He wanted them to know that God cared for them, even when life felt very difficult.

James told his friends that trouble can make our faith stronger, like a plant that grows deeper roots when the wind blows. He said that when we keep trusting God through hard days, we become patient and steady. He reminded them that God is the giver of every good gift, and he never changes.

James also talked about wisdom. He said that if anyone lacks wisdom, that person should simply ask God, who gives generously and does not scold us for asking. James told them to ask with trust, not with a doubting heart, because a person who doubts is like a wave tossed around by the wind.

Then James spoke about words and actions. He said that anyone who hears God’s word but never does what it says is like a person who looks in a mirror and forgets his own face. James encouraged his friends to be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry. He told them that a person who truly serves God helps those who are hurting, like orphans and widows.

James wanted his friends to know that God’s words are good and true. He said, in simple words, that real faith shows up in kind actions as well as in what we say.

Read It Together

James 1:17

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation, nor turning shadow.

(WEB)

Point out that every good gift comes from God, the Father of lights. Ask children to name a good gift they have received, and remind them that God is the one who gives all good things.

James 1:19

So, then, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger…

(WEB)

Show children how to listen carefully by putting a finger on their lips for speaking and tucking their ears in, then letting them practice being quick to listen. Explain that taking time before we speak or get angry helps us act like God wants.

James 1:22

But be doers of the word, and not only hearers, deluding your own selves.

(WEB)

Point out that James wants us to be doers, not just hearers. Give a simple example, such as hearing a rule to clean up toys and then actually doing it, so children see that God’s word asks us to act.

Talk About It

  • What is something you would like to ask God for help with today?
  • Why do you think God wants us to listen before we talk?
  • How can you show someone that you love God by what you do?
  • What is a time when you felt like a wave being tossed around, and what helped you feel steady?
  • Who is someone in our church or neighborhood who needs help, and how could we help them?

Activity Ideas

Wisdom Tree Drawing

You will need paper, crayons or markers, and a pencil. Have each child draw a large tree with strong roots, then write or draw a question they want to ask God for wisdom on the leaves. Talk together about how God hears every question and gives wisdom generously.

Be a Doer Game

You will need a timer and a few simple chores such as making a bed, stacking books, or washing a cup. Call out a James-style instruction like “be quick to listen” and have children freeze and listen for the next direction. Then give them a short action to do right away, so they practice being doers of God’s word.

Gift Reminder at Home

You will need an index card and a small box or envelope for each child. Have children write or draw one good gift God has given them, then place the card in the box as a reminder. Encourage them to read one card each evening and thank God for it before bed.

Teacher Notes

For adults, James 1 shows that trials can grow our faith and that God is generous in giving wisdom to those who ask in trust. It also calls believers to live out God’s word through real actions, especially caring for the vulnerable, while keeping our speech and anger in check.

With children, avoid suggesting that God sends hardship to teach them or that asking in faith guarantees every answer they hope for. Focus instead on God’s kindness, his faithfulness, and the simple truth that he is always ready to help.

A Prayer to Close

Dear God, thank you for giving us good gifts and for being steady when we feel shaky. Help us ask you for wisdom, listen before we speak, and do what your word says. Help us care for others the way you care for us. Amen.
