This lesson teaches children that God always keeps His promises, even when they are hard to hear. Children ages 5 to 11 can learn it in about 20 to 30 minutes, using a short story, one memory verse, a few Bible readings, and a simple activity.
Big Idea
God tells us the truth, and He always does what He says. When people turn away from Him, He is still faithful, and He still keeps His word.
Memory Verse
Jeremiah 19:3
Say, ‘Hear the LORD’s word, kings of Judah, and inhabitants of Jerusalem: The LORD of Armies, the God of Israel says, “Behold, I will bring evil on this place, which whoever hears, his ears will tingle.

Ask children to cup their hands behind their ears when they say “Hear the LORD’s word.” Then have them clap once for each word of the phrase, slowly and together. Repeat it three times, then ask them to whisper it.
The Story: Jeremiah 19 for Kids
God spoke to His prophet Jeremiah one day and gave him a strange job. He said, “Go and buy a clay jar from a potter.” Jeremiah bought the jar and took some of the leaders of the people with him. They walked out to a valley just outside the city of Jerusalem, a place where people had been doing very bad things.
There Jeremiah stood up and spoke loudly so everyone could hear. He told the kings and the people of Jerusalem that they had turned away from God. They had filled the land with innocent blood and had burned their children as sacrifices to a false god named Baal. God said that because of this, He would bring hard times on the city.
Then Jeremiah picked up the clay jar and smashed it on the ground in front of everyone. God told him, “I will break this people just as you broke this jar, and it will not be made whole again.” The people heard the crash and understood that God meant what He said. The terrible things would really happen.
Jeremiah did not run away from the job. He walked back into the city and stood in the courtyard of God’s house. He told everyone there the same message again. He said God was going to bring on the city all the trouble He had promised, because the people would not listen to His words.
The story is sad, but it shows something true about God. He does not say things just to sound scary. When He speaks, He keeps His word, and He is always honest with His people. Even when they do not want to hear it, He still tells them the truth so they can understand what is happening.
Read It Together
Jeremiah 19:1-2
1 Thus said the LORD, “Go, and buy a potter’s earthen bottle, and take some of the elders of the people, and of the elders of the priests; 2 and go out to the valley of the son of Hinnom, which is by the entry of the gate Harsith, and proclaim there the words that I will tell you.

Point out that God gave Jeremiah a clear instruction and that Jeremiah had to act on it. Ask children what it might be like to be sent to a place like that with a message nobody wanted to hear.
Jeremiah 19:4-5
4 Because they have forsaken me, and have defiled this place, and have burned incense in it to other gods, that they didn’t know, they and their fathers and the kings of Judah, and have filled this place with the blood of innocents, 5 and have built the high places of Baal, to burn their sons in the fire for burnt offerings to Baal; which I didn’t command, nor speak, which didn’t even enter into my mind…

Explain in simple words that the people had forgotten the true God and chosen false idols instead. Help children see that God was not happy about this, because He cares deeply about how His people live and whom they worship.
Jeremiah 19:14-15
14 Then Jeremiah came from Topheth, where the LORD had sent him to prophesy; and he stood in the court of the LORD’s house, and said to all the people: 15 “The LORD of Armies, the God of Israel says, ‘Behold, I will bring on this city and on all its towns all the evil that I have pronounced against it, because they have made their neck stiff, that they may not hear my words.’”

Show children that Jeremiah went back and kept speaking God’s words, even after the big moment at the valley. Point out that he kept being faithful even when the message was difficult to say.
Talk About It
- Why do you think God wanted the people to hear His message even though it was hard?
- How did Jeremiah show that he was willing to obey God, even when the job was scary?
- What do you think the people felt when they heard the jar break?
- Why is it good to know that God always tells us the truth?
- What is one way you can listen to God’s words and follow them this week?
Activity Ideas
Clay Jar Craft
Give each child a small ball of modeling clay or play dough and a paper cup to shape it around. Let them press the clay into a simple jar shape and decorate it with markers or stickers once it dries. As they work, talk about how the clay jar could be broken, but God’s promises never break. Keep the finished jars on the windowsill as a reminder that God keeps His word.
Hear the Word Game
Have the children stand in a line, and say “Hear the LORD’s word” in a whisper. Ask them to pass the message down the line one child at a time, each whispering it to the next. When it reaches the end, the last child says it out loud. Talk about how God’s message stays the same from one person to another, just like the words did in the game.
Take-Home Promise Card
Give each child an index card and a pencil. Ask them to write or draw one thing God has promised, such as always being with them, and tape the card to the bathroom mirror or inside a lunchbox. Encourage them to read it each morning. Explain that God’s promises are true every day, not just on Sundays.
Teacher Notes
For adults, this chapter shows that God’s judgment is real and that He is holy and faithful to His covenant. The people had turned to idols and violence, and God warned them through Jeremiah that their choices would bring serious consequences. The passage also reveals the faithfulness of a prophet who kept speaking even when the message was unwelcome.
When teaching children, avoid overstating how God punishes people or suggesting that every hard event is a direct sign of His anger. Focus instead on the truth that God is honest, He keeps His word, and He invites His people to listen and turn back to Him.
A Prayer to Close
Dear God, thank You that You always tell us the truth and always keep Your promises. Help us listen to Your words and follow them, even when it is hard. Help us trust that You are faithful every day. Amen.
