This page gives you ready-to-use Bible study questions for Job 27, with leader’s notes for each one. It suits a small group, a Sunday class, or personal study. Job 27 is Job’s firm declaration that he will keep his integrity, followed by a description of the fate of the wicked. Work through the three sets below in order, reading the chapter aloud before you begin.

Job 27 at a Glance

The chapter opens with Job swearing an oath before God that he will not speak falsely and will not give up his righteousness while he lives. He then turns to his enemies, wishing on them the fate of the wicked, and the second half of the chapter describes that fate in vivid images: wealth that is lost, children who die, a house that collapses like a moth-eaten booth, and a sudden storm that sweeps a man away.

Notice the shift in the middle of the chapter. Job moves from defending himself to speaking about God’s judgment of the wicked in general terms. Your group may want to trace that turn, since it shapes how the questions below should be discussed.

Observation Questions

Use these questions to slow the group down and ask what the text actually says before anyone offers an opinion. Let people answer from the words on the page first, and resist the urge to explain too quickly.

Job 27:2

“As God lives, who has taken away my right, the Almighty, who has made my soul bitter

(WEB)

This verse sets the foundation of Job’s oath by naming God as the living one. Reading it aloud at the start of the session reminds the group that the whole discussion happens in the presence of God.

Job 27:5-6

5 Far be it from me that I should justify you. Until I die I will not put away my integrity from me. 6 I hold fast to my righteousness, and will not let it go. My heart shall not reproach me so long as I live.

(WEB)

These lines show Job refusing to yield his integrity and holding fast to righteousness. Reading them together helps the group hear the strength of his resolve before they consider how it applies to their own lives.

Job 27:8-10

8 For what is the hope of the godless, when he is cut off, when God takes away his life? 9 Will God hear his cry when trouble comes on him? 10 Will he delight himself in the Almighty, and call on God at all times?

(WEB)

Here Job asks pointed questions about the hope of the godless and whether God hears their cry. Reading this passage aloud invites careful reflection on what it means to call on God at all times.

Job 27:19

He lies down rich, but he shall not do so again. He opens his eyes, and he is not.

(WEB)

This short verse about the rich man lying down and then being gone carries the chapter’s theme of transience. It is a good verse to pause on when discussing wealth and security.

Job 27:20-21

20 Terrors overtake him like waters. A storm steals him away in the night. 21 The east wind carries him away, and he departs. It sweeps him out of his place.

(WEB)

The images of terror, storm, and the east wind convey the suddenness of judgment as Job describes it. Reading these verses aloud gives the group a sense of the chapter’s dramatic force.

Memory Verse for Job 27

Job 27:6

I hold fast to my righteousness, and will not let it go. My heart shall not reproach me so long as I live.

(WEB)

This verse captures Job’s steadfast commitment to righteousness and his clear conscience. Memorizing it gives you a short statement of integrity to return to in seasons when honesty feels costly.

A Closing Prayer for the Group

Father, we come before you as the living God who sees our hearts and knows our struggles. Like Job, we want to hold fast to what is honest and good, even when it costs us something. Show us where we have compromised, and give us the courage to speak truthfully and to live with integrity. Help us not to place our trust in wealth, status, or anything that can be swept away, but to rest in your faithfulness. Keep our hearts clear before you, and teach us to call on you at all times, in every season of our lives. Be with each person in this group, and let what we have read and spoken draw us closer to you. Amen.
