This lesson teaches children that God made the powerful creatures of the world and is far greater than any of them. It suits children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes, including the story, the verses, and a short activity.

Big Idea

God made huge, strong animals, and he is stronger and wiser than all of them. We can trust him because he is in charge of everything.

Memory Verse

Job 41:11

Who has first given to me, that I should repay him? Everything under the heavens is mine.

(WEB)

Hold both arms out wide like a big ocean wave, then bring them back to your heart. Say “everything under the heavens is God’s” as you move your arms, so the children can feel that everything belongs to him.

The Story: Job 41 for Kids

God had been talking with a man named Job, who had lost a lot of things and felt very confused about why. God wanted Job to think about how big and wonderful the world is. So God began to talk about a huge sea creature called Leviathan. This creature was so strong that no person could catch it with a hook or tie it up with a rope.

God asked Job a question that made Job think hard. Could Job make this creature a pet, or play with it like a bird? Could Job make a deal with it? The answer was clearly no. Nobody could control this mighty creature, not even the bravest person.

The story then described how strong the creature was. Its scales were tight together, like shields that no air could slip between. When it sneezed, bright light flashed out. Fire and smoke came from its mouth and nose, like a pot boiling over a hot fire. Swords, spears, and arrows could not hurt it.

Then God said something important: “Everything under the heavens is mine.” God is the one who made the creature, and he is the one who knows how to care for it. He is bigger and more powerful than anything in the whole world.

At the end of the chapter, God reminded Job that this creature is king over all the proud animals. But God is king over everything, even over this mighty creature. Job learned that he did not have to understand everything to trust God.

Read It Together

Job 41:1-3

1 “Can you draw out Leviathan with a fish hook, or press down his tongue with a cord? 2 Can you put a rope into his nose, or pierce his jaw through with a hook? 3 Will he make many petitions to you, or will he speak soft words to you?

(WEB)

Point out the questions God asks Job. Ask the children to answer them in their own words, and show them that Job could not do any of these things because only God can control such a powerful creature.

Job 41:10

None is so fierce that he dare stir him up. Who then is he who can stand before me?

(WEB)

Show the children that nobody is brave enough to stir up this creature. Explain that God is not afraid of anything, and that he is even greater than the strongest creature he made.

Job 41:33-34

33 On earth there is not his equal, that is made without fear. 34 He sees everything that is high. He is king over all the sons of pride.”

(WEB)

Point out that there is no other animal like this one on earth, and that it is not afraid of anything. Remind the children that God sees everything and is in charge of everything, even the proud and powerful.

Talk About It

  • What is one animal you think is very strong, and why do you think it is strong?
  • How do you feel when you remember that God is bigger than everything he made?
  • Why do you think God wanted Job to think about the huge creatures in the world?
  • What is something you feel worried about, and how can knowing God is in charge help you feel safe?
  • What is one thing God made that makes you say “wow” when you see it?

Activity Ideas

Draw a Mighty Creature

You will need paper, crayons or markers, and a pencil. Ask each child to draw a big, strong animal they know or imagine. When they finish, have them write or say one thing that shows how strong their animal is. Then ask them to draw a small picture of God’s hand above their creature, to show that God is bigger than everything.

Strong Like the Creature Game

You will need an open space and a few soft pillows or cushions. Ask the children to stand tall and move slowly like a strong, heavy creature. When you call out “Everything is God’s!” everyone freezes and holds their arms out wide like a wave. Keep the game short and cheerful so children enjoy moving and remembering the big idea.

Take-Home Thankful Jar

You will need an empty jar, paper strips, and a pen. Give each child a few strips and ask them to write or draw one thing God made that they are thankful for, such as animals, the sea, or the sky. Let them place the strips in the jar and take it home. Encourage the family to read a few strips together each week to remember that God made everything.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this chapter shows that God is sovereign over all creation and over every power in the world. Job wanted answers about his suffering, and God answered by pointing to his own greatness and wisdom. The lesson invites trust in God’s wisdom even when we cannot understand everything that happens to us.

Be careful not to make the creature sound like a particular real animal, or suggest that children should be scared of it. Keep the focus on God’s power and care, not on the frightening details of the description.

A Prayer to Close

Dear God, we thank you for making such big and amazing things in the world. We know you are stronger and wiser than everything you made. Help us trust you when we do not understand everything, and remind us that you are always in charge. Amen.
