John 4:11 records the Samaritan woman’s first reply to Jesus at Jacob’s well. She points out that he has no bucket and the well is deep, so she asks how he could possibly offer her water that lasts. The words are spoken by the woman to Jesus during their conversation, which takes place in Samaria in the middle of the day.
The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. So where do you get that living water?

What John 4:11 Means
The woman starts with a practical problem. Wells in that region were dug deep into rock, and a person needed a rope and a container to get water out. Jesus had neither, so her question is blunt: where would this water come from? She is taking his words literally, the way someone might when a stranger makes an odd claim at a public well.
Her question also carries a hint of challenge. “Sir” is a polite form of address, but the rest of her sentence tests whether he knows what he is talking about. The verse does not show her accepting his offer yet. It shows her weighing it against the facts in front of her, which is an honest place to start a conversation about faith.
The Context of John 4:11
John’s Gospel was written to show who Jesus is, and it often uses ordinary settings such as meals, wells, and walks to lead into larger truths. This encounter happens in Samaria, where Jews and Samaritans kept a deep social distance. Verse 9 notes that Jews had no dealings with Samaritans, so Jesus asking this woman for a drink was unusual, and the disciples had gone into town to buy food.
Read in context, verse 11 is the middle of a back-and-forth. Jesus has just said that if she knew the gift of God, she would have asked him for living water. Her reply in verse 11 is a reaction to that offer. In verses 12 through 14 she then compares him to Jacob, and Jesus answers that the water he gives becomes a spring welling up to eternal life. Seeing the exchange as a whole helps explain why her question is a step in a conversation rather than a final word.
Key Phrases in John 4:11
John 4:14
But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never thirst again; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.”

This verse is Jesus’ direct reply to the woman’s question. It explains that the water he gives becomes a spring inside a person, which answers the problem of the deep well raised in verse 11.
John 7:37-38
37 Now on the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink! 38 He who believes in me, as the Scripture has said, from within him will flow rivers of living water.”

Here Jesus invites the thirsty to come to him and drink, and he speaks again of living water flowing from within. It widens the image begun at Jacob’s well and shows the same invitation repeated later in his ministry.
A Short Prayer From John 4:11
Lord, I bring you my honest questions, the same way the woman at the well did. Some days I look at my own situation and see only an empty bucket and a deep well, and I cannot see how anything could reach me. Help me to be willing to ask where help really comes from, and to listen closely for your answer. Give me patience to wait for what you give, and let your water rise up in me in ways I cannot manufacture on my own. Thank you that you meet people in their questions and their thirst. Amen.
