John 4:39 tells us that many people from a Samaritan town believed in Jesus because a woman who had met him told them what he had done in her life. The verse shows that a simple, honest witness can open the door to faith for others, even when that witness comes from someone others would not expect to be a teacher. The words are spoken by the narrator of John’s Gospel, describing the response of the people of Sychar, a town in Samaria, after the woman had returned to tell them about her encounter with Jesus at the well.

From that city many of the Samaritans believed in him because of the word of the woman, who testified, “He told me everything that I did.”

What John 4:39 Means

The verse begins with “From that city,” which places the belief in a specific community. These were not strangers from far away but neighbors who had heard the woman’s story firsthand. “Many of the Samaritans believed in him” tells us that the response was real and widespread, though the text does not say every person in the town came to faith. The Samaritans were a people separated from Jews by long-standing religious and ethnic tensions, so this belief was notable in itself.

The phrase “because of the word of the woman” is the heart of the verse. The people did not first see Jesus perform a sign or hear a long sermon. They trusted the report of a woman whose life had been changed in a single conversation. “Who testified” points to a witness who speaks from personal experience. Her testimony was simply, “He told me everything that I did,” a statement that stirred curiosity and led the townspeople to go out and meet Jesus for themselves.

What the verse does not promise is that a testimony alone guarantees faith in everyone who hears it. The people were moved enough to seek Jesus, and that search led to a deeper belief that the text describes in the verses that follow. The verse shows a pathway, not a formula.

The Context of John 4:39

John’s Gospel was written to show that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that those who believe in him receive life. The author often highlights individuals who come to faith through personal encounters with Jesus, and the Samaritan woman is one of the most vivid examples. Traditionally the Gospel is attributed to John the apostle, and its readers were likely Christians in the late first century who needed to understand why Jesus’ ministry reached beyond the boundaries of Israel.

Just before verse 39, Jesus speaks about sowing and reaping, saying that he has sent his disciples to gather a harvest they did not plant. The woman’s testimony is part of that harvest. Verses 40 to 42 then show the Samaritans inviting Jesus to stay, and their own faith growing beyond her words: “Now we believe, not because of your speaking.” Reading verse 39 in this setting shows that the woman’s witness was the first step in a larger movement, one that moved the people from hearing about Jesus to knowing him personally.

Key Phrases in John 4:39

Acts 1:8

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you. You will be witnesses to me in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the uttermost parts of the earth.”

This verse promises that the disciples will be witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and beyond. It shows that the call to testify, which the woman answered in John 4:39, is part of the larger mission Jesus gives his followers to spread the gospel across every region.

1 Peter 3:15

But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts; and always be ready to give an answer to everyone who asks you a reason concerning the hope that is in you, with humility and fear…

Peter encourages believers to be ready to give a reason for the hope they have, with gentleness and respect. This verse pairs well with John 4:39 by describing how a simple, honest account of faith can be shared with others in a humble and caring way.

A Short Prayer From John 4:39

Lord, thank you for the people you place in my life and for the ways you have changed my heart. Give me courage to speak honestly about what you have done for me, even when I feel my story is small. Help my words point others toward you rather than toward myself. Open the hearts of those around me to hear your voice, and let my witness be a simple step that leads them closer to you. Amen.
