This lesson teaches children that Jesus forgives people who have done wrong, and that He is the light who helps us see and follow Him. It suits children about 5 to 11 and takes 20 to 30 minutes, including the story, questions, and a short activity.

Big Idea

Jesus is kind and forgiving, and He is the light that shows us the way to live.

Memory Verse

John 8:12

Again, therefore, Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Have children cup both hands in front of their chests like a little lantern, then slowly open their hands wide while saying “light” together. Repeat it three times so the motion and the words stay together.

The Story: John 8 for Kids

Early one morning, Jesus was sitting in the temple courtyard, teaching a crowd of people who had gathered around Him. Suddenly some religious leaders came rushing in, pushing a woman in front of them. They said she had been caught doing something very wrong, and they wanted Jesus to tell them what to do with her.

The leaders were trying to trap Jesus, because the law said such people should be stoned. Jesus did not answer right away. He bent down and started writing in the dust with His finger. The leaders kept asking Him, so He stood up and said that anyone who had never sinned could throw the first stone.

Then Jesus bent down again and kept writing. One by one, the leaders quietly walked away, starting with the oldest, because their own hearts told them they had done wrong too. Only Jesus and the woman were left standing there.

Jesus looked at her and asked, “Where are your accusers? Did no one condemn you?” She answered, “No one, Lord.” Jesus told her, “Neither do I condemn you. Go your way. From now on, sin no more.” He showed her mercy and gave her a new start.

Later, Jesus spoke to the crowd again and said something wonderful about Himself. He told them, “I am the light of the world.” He explained that anyone who follows Him will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. The people were hearing that Jesus was someone very special.

Read It Together

John 8:10-11

10 Jesus, standing up, saw her and said, “Woman, where are your accusers? Did no one condemn you?” 11 She said, “No one, Lord.” Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you. Go your way. From now on, sin no more.”

Point out that Jesus did not shout at the woman or shame her. Ask children to notice how He asked her a gentle question and then gave her a second chance. Explain that forgiveness means God does not hold our mistakes against us forever.

John 8:7

But when they continued asking him, he looked up and said to them, “He who is without sin among you, let him throw the first stone at her.”

(WEB)

Show children that Jesus did not say the woman was fine to sin. He reminded everyone that nobody is perfect, including the people who were angry at her. Help them see that we should be humble and not quick to judge others.

John 8:36

If therefore the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.

(WEB)

Explain that when Jesus makes us free, we are no longer trapped by the wrong things we do. Point out the word “indeed” and help children understand that this freedom is real and lasting. Ask them what they think it feels like to be set free.

Talk About It

  • How do you think the woman felt when the leaders brought her to Jesus?
  • What did Jesus do instead of throwing a stone, and why do you think He did that?
  • Why do you think the leaders started walking away one at a time?
  • What does it mean that Jesus is the light of the world?
  • How can you show someone the kind of forgiveness Jesus showed the woman?

Activity Ideas

Paper Lantern Craft

Give each child a paper cup, a battery tea light, and some colored tissue paper. Let them glue tissue paper over cutouts in the cup to make patterns that glow when the light is on. As they work, remind them that Jesus is the light that helps us see the way to live.

Stone or Star Movement Game

Ask children to stand in a line. Call out “stone” and they crouch low and pretend to drop something, or call out “star” and they stretch tall with arms up high. Mix up the calls quickly to keep it lively. Explain that Jesus chose to show mercy instead of throwing stones.

Take-Home Forgiveness Card

Give each child an index card and a marker. Have them draw a small light bulb or sun on one side and write “Jesus forgives me” on the other. Encourage them to place it on the kitchen table or by their bed as a reminder to share forgiveness with family members this week.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this passage shows that Jesus confronts hypocrisy and offers grace at the same time. The religious leaders used the woman as a tool to test Jesus, while Jesus exposed their own sin and then gave the woman a new beginning. The statement that He is the light of the world points to Him as the source of truth and life in a dark world.

With children, avoid overstating the story’s details about sin or the conflict with the religious leaders. Keep the focus on Jesus’ kindness, His forgiveness, and His role as the light. Be careful not to suggest that the woman’s situation is something children should dwell on, and let the emphasis fall on grace and hope.

A Prayer to Close

Dear Jesus, thank You that You forgive us when we do wrong and give us a fresh start. Help us to be kind like You and not quick to judge others. Thank You for being the light of the world, so we can see the way to follow You. Amen.
