This lesson teaches children that God keeps every promise He makes, even when it takes a long time. Joshua 15 is a chapter full of land names and borders, so it is best taught as a story about a family receiving a gift from God. It suits children aged 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes.
Big Idea
God always keeps His promises. He gave Caleb a piece of land just as He said He would, and He will keep His promises to us too.
Memory Verse
Joshua 21:45
Nothing failed of any good thing which the LORD had spoken to the house of Israel. All came to pass.

Hold your hands out in front of you, palms up, like you are receiving a gift. Then bring them together over your heart. Say “God keeps His promises” as you do it, so children link the words with the gesture.
The Story: Joshua 15 for Kids
Long ago, the people of Israel had come into the land God promised them. Joshua was their leader, and he shared the land among the twelve tribes. Each family got its own part, and God told Joshua exactly where the borders should go. One tribe was called Judah, and it received a large area in the south.
A man named Caleb was part of that family. Years before, Caleb had trusted God when others were afraid. God had promised him that he would receive the land he walked upon. Now Caleb stood with his people, waiting to see God’s promise come true.
In the land there was a city called Debir, and it was held by strong enemies. Caleb said to his people, “Whoever attacks Debir and takes it, I will give my daughter Achsah to him as his wife.” A man named Othniel heard this, and he went to fight. He took the city, and Caleb kept his word.
Achsah then asked her father for something more. She said, “You have given me land in the dry south. Please give me springs of water too.” Caleb listened to her and gave her the upper springs and the lower springs. She asked boldly, and her father was happy to give her what she needed.
The chapter then lists many towns and villages that belonged to Judah. Each one was a place where families would live and grow food. God had planned every part of it. Nothing was left out, and every family had a home.
Read It Together
Joshua 15:13
He gave to Caleb the son of Jephunneh a portion among the children of Judah, according to the commandment of the LORD to Joshua, even Kiriath Arba, named after the father of Anak (also called Hebron).

Point out that God told Joshua to give Caleb his land, and Joshua obeyed. Explain that Caleb’s inheritance was a promise kept by God, who remembered Caleb’s faithfulness many years later.
Joshua 15:16-17
16 Caleb said, “He who strikes Kiriath Sepher, and takes it, to him I will give Achsah my daughter as wife.” 17 Othniel the son of Kenaz, the brother of Caleb, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter as wife.

Show children that Caleb made a promise to reward whoever took the city, and he kept it. Explain that keeping our word matters, just as God always keeps His.
Joshua 15:18-19
18 When she came, she had him ask her father for a field. She got off her donkey, and Caleb said, “What do you want?” 19 She said, “Give me a blessing. Because you have set me in the land of the South, give me also springs of water.” So he gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.

Point out that Achsah asked her father boldly for water. Encourage children to know that they can bring their needs to God and ask Him with confidence, just as she did.
Talk About It
- Why do you think Caleb waited so many years to receive his land?
- What is one promise God has made to us that we can trust?
- How did Achsah show courage when she asked her father for something?
- What is something good that you have received from God, and how did it come?
- How can we show that we keep our word, the way Caleb did?
Activity Ideas
Draw a Map of Caleb’s Land
Give each child a sheet of paper, crayons, and a pencil. Ask them to draw a simple map with a big square for the land of Judah, a small circle for Hebron, and a few dots for springs of water. Have them label the places and color the springs blue. As they draw, talk about how God gave each family a special place to live.
Promise Keepers Game
Gather the children in a open space. Call out a promise, such as “Stand up when I say a promise,” and have them move. Then say a promise God made and have them clap twice. This short game helps children remember that God’s promises are always kept. Keep the game lively and end with a cheer.
Water Blessing Card to Take Home
Cut small squares of blue paper and give one to each child. Ask them to write or draw one thing they would like God to give them, like Achsah asked for water. Let them take the card home and place it near their bed as a reminder to pray. Explain that God hears every request.
Teacher Notes
For adults, Joshua 15 shows that God faithfully fulfilled His promises to Caleb and to the tribe of Judah. The long lists of towns remind us that God is attentive to detail and cares about every family’s home. Caleb’s faith, first shown decades earlier, was rewarded in God’s time.
With children, avoid overstating the lists of cities as if every name has a special lesson. Focus on the big picture of God keeping His word. The chapter’s many place names are better used to show that God planned everything carefully than to teach each one.
A Prayer to Close
Lord, thank You for keeping every promise You make. Thank You for Caleb’s faith and for the land You gave his family. Help us trust You when we have to wait for something good. Give us courage to ask You for what we need, the way Achsah did. Amen.
