Joshua 19:6 is a simple land record. It names two towns, Beth Lebaoth and Sharuhen, and gives the total of thirteen cities with their surrounding villages that were assigned to the tribe of Simeon when Israel divided the promised land. The verse is part of a list spoken by the narrator of the book of Joshua, who is recording how each tribe received its portion for the people of Israel.

What Joshua 19:6 Means

The verse begins with two place names. Beth Lebaoth and Sharuhen are towns in the southern region of Canaan, near the area later associated with the Negev. The writer is not telling a story here; he is marking boundaries on a map that his first readers would have understood at a glance.

The phrase “thirteen cities with their villages” shows that a tribal inheritance was more than a single town. Each city served as a center, and the smaller farming settlements around it belonged to the same allotment. The number matters because it tells the reader exactly how much land and how many households the tribe held.

What the verse does not promise is a personal blessing or a message aimed at your life. It describes a historical division of land. Its value lies in showing that God’s promises to Israel were carried out in specific, concrete places, which is a reason to trust the rest of the book’s record.

The Context of Joshua 19:6

The book of Joshua is traditionally attributed to Joshua himself, with later editing that many scholars date to the period after the monarchy began. It was written for an Israelite audience who wanted to know how their ancestors had entered and divided the land. The verse sits inside a block of names, Joshua 19:3 through 19:9, that describes the inheritance of the tribe of Simeon.

Just before the verse, the text lists Hazar Shual, Balah, Ezem, Eltolad, Bethul, Hormah, Ziklag and others. Just after it, the list continues with Ain, Rimmon, Ether and Ashan, and the passage then explains that Simeon’s land was taken out of the portion first given to Judah. Seen this way, Joshua 19:6 is one step in a careful explanation of why Simeon received a share inside Judah’s territory, which the verse itself does not state directly.

Key Phrases in Joshua 19:6

Joshua 19:49

So they finished distributing the land for inheritance by its borders. The children of Israel gave an inheritance to Joshua the son of Nun among them.

This verse closes the entire land division and states that the people finished dividing the inheritance by tribe. It shows that the list in Joshua 19:6 was part of a completed process, which helps you read the smaller records as pieces of a finished whole.

Genesis 49:7

Cursed be their anger, for it was fierce; and their wrath, for it was cruel. I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel.

(WEB)

Jacob’s blessing on his sons foretold that the tribe of Simeon would be scattered in Israel. The later scattering of Simeon’s cities inside Judah’s land fulfills that earlier word, so the verse helps explain why Simeon’s inheritance looked the way it did.

A Short Prayer From Joshua 19:6

Lord, you were faithful to Simeon and to every tribe when you led Israel into the land and gave each family its place. Help me to trust your plan for my own portion, even when it seems smaller than I hoped. Teach me to be honest and careful in what I hold, and to thank you for the good things you have set in my hands. Give me patience to wait for your timing, and a heart that is content with the inheritance you have given me. Amen.
