Matthew 15:28 records Jesus praising a Canaanite mother for her persistent faith and then granting her request, healing her daughter at that very moment. The verse shows that Jesus honors faith that refuses to give up, even when it seems to be pushed aside. The words are spoken by Jesus himself, directly to the woman who has pleaded for mercy on her daughter’s behalf.

Then Jesus answered her, “Woman, great is your faith! Be it done to you even as you desire.” And her daughter was healed from that hour.

What Matthew 15:28 Means

Jesus begins by calling the woman’s faith “great.” In this Gospel, that word is rare when describing faith, and it stands out because the woman is not an Israelite. Her confidence in Jesus’ mercy has held firm through an exchange that many would have found discouraging, and Jesus names that trust openly.

The second sentence is a granting of her request. The phrase “be it done to you as you desire” means that what she has asked for will happen. Jesus does not spell out a formula or a procedure. He simply responds to the desire of a faithful heart, and the healing follows immediately.

The verse does not promise that every prayer will be answered in the exact way we picture, or that persistence alone earns a yes. It shows that Jesus responds to faith that clings to him and to his mercy, and that his answer can extend beyond the boundaries people expect.

The Context of Matthew 15:28

Matthew’s Gospel was written for a readership familiar with Jewish scripture and customs, and it often emphasizes Jesus as the promised King of Israel. Within that framework, this episode is striking because the woman is a Canaanite, an outsider to the covenant people, and Jesus appears at first to decline her request, saying he was sent to the lost sheep of Israel.

Just before the verse, Jesus uses the image of children’s bread being given to dogs, and the woman replies that even dogs eat the crumbs under the table. Her answer accepts the picture Jesus has used and still asks for help. Seen this way, the verse is the climax of a conversation in which her humility and tenacity move Jesus to show the breadth of his mercy.

Key Phrases in Matthew 15:28

Mark 7:29

He said to her, “For this saying, go your way. The demon has gone out of your daughter.”

Mark records the same encounter and includes Jesus telling the woman that because of her word, the demon has left her daughter. Reading it alongside Matthew 15:28 shows the same healing from a second angle and reinforces that the mother’s words of faith were central to the outcome.

Hebrews 11:6

Without faith it is impossible to be well pleasing to him, for he who comes to God must believe that he exists, and that he is a rewarder of those who seek him.

This verse explains that pleasing God requires faith, and that those who seek him must believe he rewards those who earnestly seek him. It helps explain why Jesus praises the woman’s faith, showing that trust in God’s goodness is at the heart of the Christian life.

A Short Prayer From Matthew 15:28

Lord Jesus, you saw the faith of a woman who came to you with a desperate request for her daughter. Help me to bring my own hopes and needs to you with that same steady trust, even when the answer seems slow or uncertain. Let my faith be real and humble, and remind me that you are merciful beyond what I expect. Thank you for hearing those who come to you. Amen.
