Matthew 24:36 means that nobody knows the exact day or hour when the end of the age and the return of the Son of Man will happen, not even the angels in heaven. Only the Father has that knowledge. Jesus says this to his disciples on the Mount of Olives, after they ask him about the destruction of the temple and the signs of his coming.

But no one knows of that day and hour, not even the angels of heaven, but my Father only.

What Matthew 24:36 Means

The phrase “that day and hour” points to a specific moment, the time when Jesus will return and bring the age to its close. Jesus is not saying the timing is random or unknown to God. He is saying that the exact timing is held by the Father alone, and no one else has been given that information.

The phrase “not even the angels of heaven” is important because angels are high in God’s created order, yet they still do not know this moment. The verse makes clear that the limit on knowledge is built into God’s plan, not a failure of the people who are waiting. The phrase “but my Father only” places that knowledge with the Father in a unique way.

What the verse does not promise is a calendar. Jesus does not give a date, and he does not invite speculation about one. The verse does promise that the return is certain, and that God is fully in control of when it happens, which is a different kind of comfort than a timetable would provide.

The Context of Matthew 24:36

Matthew’s Gospel was written for a community that knew the Jewish scriptures well and was learning to live as followers of Jesus. In chapter 24, Jesus answers questions about the destruction of the temple and what will come before the end. The verses just before this one describe signs and urge the disciples to watch, saying that the nearness of these things will be visible to them.

The verses that follow compare the coming of the Son of Man to the days of Noah, when people went about ordinary life and did not notice the flood until it came. That comparison shows why the hour is hidden: the point is watchfulness and readiness, not a prediction. Read in this setting, verse 36 is less a statement about what God has withheld from curious minds and more a call to stay alert in the present.

Key Phrases in Matthew 24:36

Acts 1:7

He said to them, “It isn’t for you to know times or seasons which the Father has set within his own authority.

(WEB)

In this verse the risen Jesus tells his disciples that the times and dates belong to the Father’s authority. It echoes Matthew 24:36 and shows that the early church was taught the same boundary on knowing the timing of God’s plans.

Matthew 24:42

Watch therefore, for you don’t know in what hour your Lord comes.

(WEB)

This verse comes just after the passage on the hidden hour and calls the disciples to keep watch because they do not know the day their Lord will come. It turns the mystery of the timing into a daily call to readiness and faithfulness.

A Short Prayer From Matthew 24:36

Father, you alone know the day and the hour, and I am glad that the timing of all things rests in your wise and loving hands. I confess that I often want to know what comes next and feel anxious when I cannot see the path ahead. Help me to trust you with what I cannot know, and to keep my heart awake to your presence today. Teach me to live faithfully in the present, watching and serving with hope. Amen.
