Matthew 26:3 describes the moment Jesus’ most powerful opponents formally came together to decide how to act against him. The verse tells us that the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders of the people gathered in the courtyard of the high priest, Caiaphas, to make a plan. Matthew is narrating this event for his readers rather than quoting a speech, so the gathering itself is the point of the verse.

Then the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders of the people were gathered together in the court of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas.

What Matthew 26:3 Means

The verse names three groups. The chief priests were the leading members of the temple establishment, responsible for worship and for much of Jerusalem’s religious and political life. The scribes were experts in the law of Moses who taught and copied Scripture. The elders were respected senior figures among the people. Together they represent the whole structure of religious authority in Jerusalem, which explains why their meeting carried such weight.

The phrase “gathered together” signals deliberate, organized action rather than a casual conversation. The location, “the court of the high priest,” places the meeting in the home or residence of Caiaphas, the official who held the high priesthood that year. Matthew wants his readers to see that the decision against Jesus came from the very center of institutional power, not from a few angry individuals.

What the verse does not do is tell us the content of their discussion. That comes in the next verses. Matthew 26:3 simply sets the stage. It promises nothing about God’s response in that room. It only shows human leaders aligning against the one Matthew has presented as the Messiah.

The Context of Matthew 26:3

Matthew was written for a community of Jewish Christians, most likely in the decades after Jesus’ death, and it presents Jesus as the promised king who fulfills the Old Testament. Its readers already knew the story of the crucifixion, so Matthew’s careful detail about who met, where, and why would have stood out as a deliberate reminder of how the opposition to Jesus was organized.

Just before this verse, Jesus has finished a long teaching and announced that the Passover is two days away and that he will be handed over to be crucified. Verse 3 then shows the leaders responding to that announcement with their own plot. Verses 4 and 5 reveal their intent to seize Jesus by deceit and their concern about a public uproar during the feast. The verse reads differently once you see it as the bridge between Jesus’ clear prediction and the leaders’ hidden scheme.

Key Phrases in Matthew 26:3

Acts 4:27-28

27 “For truly, in this city against your holy servant, Jesus, whom you anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, were gathered together 28 to do whatever your hand and your council foreordained to happen.

Peter’s prayer in Acts names the same coalition of rulers and officials who opposed Jesus, then declares that their actions accomplished what God’s hand had planned. It helps you see that human conspiracy in Matthew 26 operates within God’s larger purpose.

Psalm 2:1-2

1 Why do the nations rage, and the peoples plot a vain thing? 2 The kings of the earth take a stand, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his Anointed, saying…

This psalm pictures rulers gathering together against the Lord and his anointed. Reading it alongside Matthew 26:3 shows that the pattern of earthly powers conspiring against God’s chosen king is deeply rooted in Scripture.

A Short Prayer From Matthew 26:3

Lord, I confess that I have seen how easily people gather to plan against those who threaten their position, and I have sometimes been part of such plans myself. Give me a heart that refuses to join in unfairness and courage to speak truth when others are scheming. When I feel surrounded by people who oppose what is good, remind me that you see every hidden meeting and that your purposes stand firm. Keep me faithful to Jesus, even when the powerful gather against him or against me. Amen.
