Matthew 4:23 describes how Jesus spent his early public ministry: traveling through the whole region of Galilee, teaching in local meeting places, announcing God’s kingdom, and healing many kinds of sickness among the people. Matthew, the Gospel writer traditionally identified as the tax collector who became one of the twelve apostles, is recording this summary for readers who want to understand what Jesus was doing at the start of his work.

Jesus went about in all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the Good News of the Kingdom, and healing every disease and every sickness among the people.

What Matthew 4:23 Means

The verse opens with Jesus going about “in all Galilee,” which tells you his ministry was not confined to one town. He moved from village to village, making himself available across a whole territory. The phrase “teaching in their synagogues” places his instruction in the Jewish gathering places where Scripture was read and discussed, so his message was delivered within the existing religious life of the community.

The verse then names two parallel activities. “Preaching the Good News of the Kingdom” describes the heart of his message: God’s rule was breaking into human history, and that was welcome news. The verse ends with “healing every disease and every sickness among the people,” which shows his teaching was joined to visible acts of compassion. The verse is a summary, not a promise that every person in every generation will be healed in this life. It describes what Jesus did, and it reveals the character of the kingdom he announced.

The Context of Matthew 4:23

Matthew wrote his Gospel primarily for a Jewish-Christian audience who knew the Hebrew Scriptures well and expected the Messiah to bring God’s promised reign. Within the book, the Galilee ministry follows the call of the first disciples, Peter, Andrew, James and John, who immediately leave their nets and their boat to follow Jesus. Matthew 4:23 explains what those first followers were joining: a teacher who taught with authority and healed people wherever they lived.

The verses that come directly after the summary, Matthew 4:24-25, describe the news spreading into Syria and crowds gathering from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea and beyond the Jordan. Read in that setting, Matthew 4:23 is the hinge between calling disciples and attracting multitudes. It shows the pattern of Jesus’ ministry, teaching and healing going together, and it sets up the Sermon on the Mount that follows in chapters 5 through 7.

Key Phrases in Matthew 4:23

Mark 1:14-15

14 Now after John was taken into custody, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the Good News of God’s Kingdom, 15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and God’s Kingdom is at hand! Repent, and believe in the Good News.”

Mark gives a parallel account of Jesus beginning to preach the good news of God, announcing that the time is fulfilled and the kingdom of God has come near. Reading it alongside Matthew 4:23 confirms the same message from a second Gospel.

Isaiah 61:1-2

1 The Lord the LORD’s Spirit is on me; because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the humble. He has sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to those who are bound; 2 to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn…

Isaiah describes an anointed messenger bringing good news to the poor and proclaiming liberty, which Jesus later read in the synagogue and applied to himself. This passage shows the Old Testament hope behind the ministry Matthew describes.

A Short Prayer From Matthew 4:23

Lord Jesus, you went through every town and village of Galilee, teaching, preaching and caring for those who were sick. Thank you that your compassion did not stop at the edges of the crowd. Give me a teachable heart that is willing to listen to your Word in the places where I gather with your people. Where I carry illness, fear or weakness, help me bring it honestly to you and trust your care. Make your kingdom real in my ordinary days, and help me share the good news with the people around me. Amen.
