This morning prayer is written for a missionary, someone who has left familiar ground to serve God in a place where the language, customs, and daily rhythms may feel unfamiliar. Pray it first thing, before messages and meetings pull your attention away. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Morning Prayer for a Missionary

Lord, you are awake before the sun rises, and you have been faithful through every night we have ever known. Thank you for the one you have called to serve in a place far from home. Today they will wake to a different light, hear a different language in the street, and carry a weight that few people back home can see. Go before them into every conversation, every market, every clinic, and every quiet hour alone. Give them clear thinking when the words will not come and patience when the work moves slowly.

Protect their body and their health in climates and conditions that wear down the strongest people. Guard their family, whether they are traveling with them or missing them from across an ocean. Keep their heart from growing tired or bitter when the results seem small. Remind them that the seed they plant is yours to grow. Let them feel your nearness at the first meal, on the long walk to work, and when the phone call home does not connect. Give them the right word for the person in front of them today, and the courage to speak it kindly. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, my missionary friend is starting a new day far from home. Go with them today. Give them wisdom in each conversation, strength for the work, and peace when they feel lonely or unseen. Keep them safe, keep them healthy, and let them know you are already at work in the people they will meet. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 46:10

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.”

(WEB)

Pray this when the day feels crowded with demands. Ask God to quiet the anxious thoughts about language, schedules, and results, so the missionary can stop long enough to recognize who God is.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Read this over the missionary as the day begins. Thank God that his mercies are new each morning, and ask that the missionary receives fresh strength today, not yesterday’s supply.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Use this verse when fear or homesickness rises early. Speak it slowly, asking God to be the steady presence the missionary feels when they are far from familiar faces.

Matthew 28:19-20

19 Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I commanded you. Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

(WEB)

Pray this for the missionary’s calling and purpose. Ask that they would remember the mission is not theirs alone, because the one who sent them has promised to stay with them.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Bring the day’s worries to God in prayer using this passage. Ask that the peace of God would guard the missionary’s heart and mind as they step into unfamiliar situations.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer while you are still seated, with a cup of coffee or tea in your hands, before you check your phone. Keeping a small notebook nearby can help. Write the missionary’s name, their city, and one concern they mentioned recently, so the prayer stays specific rather than general.

You might also invite a friend or your church’s prayer group to pray the same words at the same hour. Many people find it encouraging to know that others are lifting the same person into God’s presence each morning, even across time zones.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before your missionary today, behind them, beside them, and within them. May he give them the words they need, the rest they require, and the joy that comes from serving him faithfully.
